New NETWise Podcast

The Journey to Diagnosis

Undergoing testing for cancer is anxiety-provoking. Tests can involve things many people don’t like — needles, surgical biopsies, or lying still in a PET/CT scanner tube. But the worst part for many is waiting for results. You might anticipate feeling very happy or sad about your results. But few expect to be confused.
  • What do these numbers mean?
  • What is this test supposed to tell me?
  • Why do I need more tests?
Neuroendocrine tumor (NET) tests have odd-sounding names (5-HIAA, Ki-67, and Ga-68). We will help you to get more familiar with these tests. This episode of NETWise discusses the tests used to diagnose NETs to help you understand their significance. Once you finish this podcast, you will find it easier to talk to your doctor about diagnostic testing and be better able to explain the significance of your test results to friends and family members.  Listen now

Research

Researching PRRT for Lung

David Morse, PhD, Moffitt Cancer Center,  is exploring a novel radiotherapy, Ac-225 dotatate, a derivative of Lu-177 dotatate in PRRT for lung NETs in laboratory models. This therapy emits alpha particles instead of beta. Alpha particles are bigger, higher-powered, with a shorter reach, which researchers hope will be more effective in killing lung NET cells with decreased toxicity in surrounding normal tissues. COMPETE Clinical Trial

PRRT to be compared with Everolimus

A new phase III clinical trial called COMPETE compares everolimus, an oral targeted therapy, to PRRT with Lu-177 edotreotide, a radiopharmaceutical under development, in patients with progressive, nonfunctional GI tract NETs and any NETs in the pancreas, which cannot be removed surgically. To be eligible, participants must have tested positive for somatostatin receptors using any somatostatin receptor scan or biopsy. (MORE)

Book Launch

Aretha's Life in Photos

Photojournalist Linda Solomon just released the book, "The Queen Next Door: Aretha Franklin, An Intimate Portrait," which documents Franklin's personal life and career in photos. Solomon's friendship with Aretha Franklin spanned several decades and allowed her unique access to the Queen of Soul. Solomon hopes the book shows Aretha as a caring, kind, and down-to-earth individual who treasured her family and friends. NETRF CEO Elyse Gellerman and Chief Development Officer Susan Payson were on hand for the National Book Launch at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where a panel of those who knew her best paid tribute to Detroit's Queen Next Door. Solomon has used the book release to increase visibility for NETRF's Aretha Franklin Fund for Neuroendocrine Cancer Research.
