Candidate Trump made divisive statements, encouraged violence at his campaign rallies, shared space with racists, and rode their fear and anger all the way to the White House. Ergo, who is surprised that his entrance to the Oval Office did not serve as some sort of metamorphosis? That he continues to defend and celebrate white nationalists? Who expected a Commander-In-Chief who would all of a sudden support equality and immediately and miraculously achieve the dignity required to occupy the office? Candidate Trump had senators, members of Congress, mayors, and others who supported his candidacy, defended his words, and even echoed them. Ergo, who is surprised at the silence of those who have been silent and/or complicit for years on the heels of his press conference yesterday? The sub-human racists who marched in Charlottesville have since returned to homes, children, and spouses. They have returned to offices where they work among us and impact the lives of people of color. And, today, they have breathed a sigh of relief after the President of the United States stood before the world yesterday to let them know he has their back. Standing next to him while he made these remarks? Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao. Who showed up at the WH today still working for this president? The same people who rolled with him on the campaign trail. Some are people of color. Some are not. But they are unified in their complicity for a man who continues to defend, elevate, and celebrate white supremacists. Never forget. Here’s what we have today:- Mourners will gather in Charlottesville, VA today to honor 32-year-old Heather Heyer who was killed when a car rammed into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist rally that descended into violence last weekend. Attendees were asked to wear purple, Heyer's favorite color, in her memory. As of this morning, the president has yet to call her family.
- Trump can be beaten. Earlier this week, he lost a six-year legal battle to trumpet player Tom Scharfeld. While seemingly small in the face of everything going on around us, it shows that the perseverance of the little guy, fighting for what’s right, pays off in the end.

Obama Breaks His Own Twitter Record
Yesterday, we told you former President Barack Obama’s tweet quoting Nelson Mandela featuring a 2011 picture of him greeting kids at a day care facility near Sasha’s school was the third-most liked tweet in Twitter’s history. Now, POTUS44 has broken his own record. With more than 3.1 million likes already, it’s the most “liked” tweet in Twitter history. A spokesperson for Twitter said the tweet broke the record just after 10P on Tuesday. That was hours after Donald Trump defended white supremacists in his most recent remarks about the domestic terrorist attack that happened on Saturday in Charlottesville, VA. More here.

Quad-Caucus Demands Immediate Removal of Bannon, Gorka, Miller
On Tuesday, the leadership of the Congressional Quad-Caucus -- which is comprised of chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) -- with Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) sent a letter to Donald Trump calling for the immediate removal of Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, and Stephen Miller from the White House. “As Members of Congress, but more importantly, as Americans, we are deeply concerned that their continued influence on U.S. policy emboldens and tacitly approves the ideological extremism that leads white supremacists to spread violence and hatred,” the letter reads. Luis Gutiérrez and Ben Jealous Arrested During DACA Rally
Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) and MD gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous were arrested Tuesday during a rally in support of DACA. Though Trump has said DACA recipients should “rest easy,” he has failed to commit fully to protecting the program, leading some to worry that the program’s vast stores of data on undocumented people could be used to target them for deportation. “I am a citizen and know when I leave my house in the morning that I will return that night, but millions of immigrants leave for work or school each day unsure whether they will be arrested and detained. I gave up a few hours of my freedom to stand up for them,” said Gutiérrez. “It is a shame and an embarrassment – es una vergüenza – the way this White House has turned on immigrants and fomented animosity towards immigrant families.” Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of the immigrant advocacy group CASA, was also arrested. CASA retweeted a report that 25 additional people had been arrested. Video on Gutiérrez’s Facebook page shows individuals at the sit-in in front of the White House being arrested one-by-one. Chao Says She Stands By Her Man -- Both of Them
On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said she supports both her husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Donald Trump. The two are beefing over Trump’s cyberbullying Twitter fingers repeatedly blaming McConnell for the Senate's failure to pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare, going so far as to suggest that McConnell step down if he can't get Trump's agenda through the chamber. "I stand by my man — both of them,” Chao told reporters in NYC on Tuesday. And she did just that on Tuesday afternoon while the president elevated and defended white supremacists in a press conference. Chao had participated in an infrastructure discussion earlier with the president at Trump Tower. More here.

Bennie Thompson Calls for Removal of All Confederate Monuments in U.S. Capitol and Mississippi
On Tuesday, Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) called for the removal of all Confederate monuments and emblems in the United States Capitol and on the Mississippi state flag. “Confederate memorabilia have no place in this country and especially not in the United States Capitol. These images symbolize a time of racial discrimination and segregation that continues to haunt this country and many African-Americans who still to this day face racism and bigotry,” he said in a statement. He's not alone. Others are following suit. More on that below. Read more here on Thompson's statement.

Civil Rights Violation Lawsuit Filed Against Sheriff David Clarke
Trump supporter and Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke is the subject of a lawsuit. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the family of Terrill Thomas, who died of dehydration at the Milwaukee County Jail last year, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Monday over his death. The lawsuit comes 3½ months after an inquest jury recommended seven people involved in Thomas' detention be charged with crimes, and while District Attorney John Chisholm continues to weigh that decision. The seven jail officials are among 29 defendants named in the lawsuit, including Clarke, whose office runs the jail. The lawsuit says Thomas was subjected to unconscionable pain and suffering, causing his death after he was placed in isolation with no bedding and no water -- a violation of jail policy. More here.

Catherine Pugh Latest to Topple Confederacy
Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh on Monday announced plans to remove four Confederate statues in the city’s public spaces, which were approved by the City Council that night. Crews began removing Baltimore’s Confederate statues early Wednesday. In California, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery announced plans Tuesday to take down a monument commemorating Confederate veterans after hundreds of activists requested its removal, with some threatening vandalism. Across the nation, Confederate monuments have come under renewed scrutiny. The mayor of Lexington, KY is seeking approval to relocate two Confederate-era monuments in the city, citing the Charlottesville clashes for the timing of his decision. Officials in other southern cities have been considering removal as well. More here.

Intel Releases Diversity Report
On Tuesday, Intel released their diversity and inclusion report. Encouragingly, they say they’re seeing a stable progress of female, Hispanic, and Native American representation. However, as African American numbers remain flat, they say they have more work to do in achieving full representation by Blacks in technical roles. In June, as part of the company’s previously announced $300 million commitment to diversity, Intel announced a new grant program under which they’re investing $4.5 million in support of STEM pathways programs at HBCUs. Barbara Whye, VP of Human Resources and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Intel Corporation, said, “The social and political climate has evolved as issues of diversity and inclusion have become ever more pressing, especially in our industry. That makes our effort to achieve full representation even more urgent. We’ve come a long way, but there is still much to be done. Since taking on the role of chief diversity and inclusion officer in April, I’ve been evaluating our progress, reflecting on the lessons learned and considering how best to achieve our goals.” See the full report here.

Jayapal Leads Dem Resolution for Trump to Fire Bannon, Gorka, and Miller
In the aftermath of the “Unite the Right” rally and the domestic terrorist attack in Charlottesville, VA, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) -- joined by 31 other members of Congress -- introduced a resolution urging Donald Trump to further condemn white nationalists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups responsible for the violence, and to remove from the White House and the Trump administration individuals -- including Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, and Sebastian Gorka -- who support white supremacists. Jayapal said, “White supremacy must be uprooted from our society, but the president has elevated white nationalists to the highest posts of government. It’s time to get these people out of the White House. Donald Trump must unequivocally condemn hate groups and remove from the administration individuals who espouse bigotry or support white supremacists. Enough is enough. The president needs to take decisive action.” See the full resolution and co-sponsors here.

Lieu Leads Foreign Affairs Committee Letter Questioning Trump on Diplomatic Security Nominee
On Monday, Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA) led members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in sending a letter to Donald Trump urging him to nominate a new Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security. In May, committee members wrote to Trump urging him to quickly nominate a candidate to this position. Since then, no nomination has been made, and Acting Assistant Secretary Bill Miller has tendered his resignation. “The United States must never ask our citizens to serve their nation abroad without providing them the peace of mind that they will be protected while doing so. After making Benghazi such a central issue of your campaign, your disregard for the security of our diplomats sends a terrible message and shows a serious failure of leadership,” Lieu writes. Will Lionel Richie Boycott Kennedy Center Honors Because of 45?
“Hello? Is it me you’re looking for?” Because if you’re at the Kennedy Center Honors, he may not be there. Singer Lionel Richie, who is one of several high-profile Hollywood figures being recognized at December’s Honors ceremony, says he’s going to play it by ear. Appearing on NBC’s TODAY Show, he told hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie he’s “not really happy with what’s going on right now.” He spoke about the consistent controversies coming out of the administration. They’re weekly, daily, hourly,” Richie said. “But I think I’m just going to wait it out for a minute and see where it’s gonna be by that time.” More here from The Hill.

Sharpton Says Bias, Hate, and Racism Now Mainstream in America
In an op-ed in The Guardian on Monday, Reverend Al Sharpton said the people of NYC have known for many years that Donald Trump is not above giving dog whistles to people and certain groups. Sharpton recounts a long history with Trump, from him purchasing full-page ads in four major newspapers in the 1980s calling for the death penalty to be reinstated in NY against five Black and Latino young men in the Central Park jogger rape case, to questioning the citizenship of former President Barack Obama. “What we have just witnessed this weekend was a president who did more than just ignore the problem of white supremacy. He failed to immediately show the moral courage and leadership required by one who is the head of the highest office in the land,” Sharpton wrote. Read the entire piece here.

April Ryan Talks About Trump’s Attack Ad Against Her
As The Beat DC reported on Monday, Donald Trump released an ad attacking journalist April Ryan, among others. Ryan discusses being the subject of the president’s ire in a piece she wrote for Cosmopolitan. “I’ve felt unsafe several times in my career as a journalist — I’ve even received death threats — but the president’s “enemies” ad causes me great concern as racial tensions rise.” This ad was released one day after the terrorism in Charlottesville, VA. “I can't speak for the others in the ad, but my heart and mind won't let me be quiet. I am not deterred -- in fact, it is a badge of honor that shows me I’m doing my job well. But I am disappointed in this action that is so against what our forefathers set out for this country.” Read the entire piece here.

Katyal May Head Back to Supreme Court -- This Time It’s Over the Death Penalty
A new challenge to the constitutionality of the death penalty could hit the Supreme Court's docket soon. Former Obama administration Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal filed a petition on Monday on behalf of Abel Daniel Hidalgo, an Arizona death row inmate. Katyal, who argued more cases before SCOTUS the last term than any other attorney, has garnered attention for his arguments against Trump's travel ban. Now Katyal may be heading right back when the court is back in session. Hidalgo pleaded guilty in 2015 to two January 2001 murders in a murder-for-hire scheme in Maricopa County. He was then sentenced to death by a jury. “Arizona’s scheme utterly fails,” Katyal wrote, to “genuinely narrow the class of persons eligible for the death penalty.” The filing comes more than two years after Justice Stephen Breyer, joined by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, called for a wholesale review of the constitutionality of the death penalty. Justice Sonia Sotomayor has also expressed great concerns about the courts’ handling of death penalty cases, as well as some states’ death penalty laws. And Justice Anthony Kennedy has expressed concerns about the death penalty’s imposition. More here.

125+ Mayors and County Officials Call on Trump to Protect DACA
Over 100 mayors and county officials from 35 states sent a letter yesterday to Donald Trump calling on him to continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program until a legislative solution is enacted for all undocumented immigrant youth. Citing the civic and economic impact that DREAMers have on their communities, the Cities for Action coalition defended DACA recipients. “As an immigrant myself, I want others to have the same opportunities that I’ve had. My family was able to become citizens because Ronald Reagan signed the 1986 immigration bill. It’s time for this Republican Congress to follow his lead,” said Long Beach (CA) Mayor Robert García. “Washington, DC remains steadfastly committed to promoting and defending DC values. This includes supporting our residents who seek life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. We urge the President to uphold our country’s commitment to our DREAMers,” said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. Read more here.

Gallego Says Admin Lacks Coherent North Korea Strategy
In an op-ed for The Hill, Congressman Rubén Gallego (D-AZ), an Iraq war veteran and a member of the Armed Services Committee, says Donald Trump lacks vision on North Korea. Gallego asks some very forward and thoughtful questions: What are we doing? Why are we doing it? How are we getting there? “The White House’s policy is a jumbled word cloud of nothingness,” he writes. “The appalling inadequacy of the president, secretary of State, and other Trump administration officials should highlight that this is a crisis of confidence as much as anything else. But it should not blind us to realistic options if we hold our nerve, think strategically, and aggressively pursue the best interests of the United States.” Read the entire piece here.

Federal Court Strikes Down Parts of Texas Redistricting Map That Discriminated Against Latinos
On Tuesday, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled that two of Texas’ current congressional redistricting plans intentionally discriminated against Latino voters and diluted Latino voting strength. The federal court has ordered Texas to advise whether it will take up redistricting in a special legislative session to address the violations in the congressional redistricting plan. If lawmakers do not take up redistricting, the court will hold a hearing to consider remedial plans on September 5th. Texas AG Ken Paxton has vowed to ask the Supreme Court to review the maps. Dallas state Representative Rafael Anchía (D), who leads the Mexican American Legislative Caucus which is a plaintiff in the case, said, "Texas failed to act for too long. Thousands of Texans have cast their vote under unconstitutional maps. Partisan politics compromised our electoral maps, and as a result, every Texan lost." The Dallas Morning News has more here.

Puerto Rico Continues Statehood Push By Swearing In Congressional Delegation
On Tuesday, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló (D) continued the push towards Puerto Rican statehood by swearing in the seven members of its Puerto Rico Statehood Commission, the delegation that will go to Washington and ask to be seated in Congress. The commission was sworn in at a ceremony at the governor's official residence in San Juan. Rosselló's father, Pedro Rosselló González (pictured), a former governor, was named the commission's chairman. "We will request to be recognized and to be allowed participation in Congress," Rosselló González told The Hill. The former governor added that the group's expectation is not for Congress to immediately allow accession, but to lobby the cause of statehood until it's implemented. "[The commission] will start a series of initiatives to draw attention and sensitize the nation about the need for Puerto Ricans to be recognized in equality as American citizens," he said, adding, "Thirty-seven times, sooner or later, [territories] have been accepted as states within the union."
