UP Parent Newsletter: April 2020
Dear Pilot Families,
Wherever this email finds you, may it find you safe and healthy. Like I am learning to do, I hope you and your student are being patient, giving yourself grace during this pandemic, and allowing yourself to take things one day at a time, focusing on the good whenever possible.
I hope you find the various resources in this month’s newsletter helpful, including an opportunity to join the UP Health and Counseling Center and the Active Minds student organization this coming Sunday as they discuss ways to support your student during this time of transition.
Please remember that our office is here to talk with you, help answer questions, or simply process with you something your student might be facing. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Katie Seccombe
Associate Director, Parent Engagement

A Message of Hope

Easter is here! An Easter that is unlike any we have seen before. For Christian communities around the world it is a time to celebrate that Jesus of Nazareth, after undergoing a dehumanizing and brutal death, rose from the dead to die no more. In doing so, he offers a way for all to move through death to life. It is an amazing claim; it is an amazing possibility. In it we celebrate that even in the darkest of moments or most desperate situations, God has that capacity to enter in and bring us through to new life. We celebrate how that unfolded in the way of Jesus Christ. For our family, our community, and our world, we may still have some time before we see how it will unfold. May God bless the whole of our community at this time with renewed hope that there is a way through to new life. May we each be a witness to that hope for our community.
From Fr. Jim Gallagher, C.S.C., Director of Campus Ministry

Mental Health: How to Support Your Student

Student riding bike
We know the topic of mental health is vitally important and weighing heavily on the minds of both our students and our families. Join the UP Health and Counseling Center and the student group Active Minds this Sunday, April 19, at 4 p.m. PST for a discussion on ways to support your student during this time of transition. This meeting will consist of a presentation and discussion portion, as well as time for Q & A.

Academics: Finishing Off the Semester Strong

Last month, we covered strategies for online learning, but we know this transition continues to be a challenge for many students. This month, we’re sharing some timely advice from Brenda Greiner, Director of the Shepard Academic Resource Center (SARC), as well as suggestions for supporting your student as they prepare for finals from Br. Thomas Giumenta, C.S.C., the University's Counselor for Learning Assistance. All divisions of the SARC are meeting with students and available to help.

Virtual Commencement Exercises

As you read from Fr. Poorman’s recent message, the University looks forward to an in-person celebration of the Class of 2020 at a future date. We also plan to proceed with virtual commencement exercises on May 3. We may be practicing social distancing, but we’ve put together a list of ideas for how to make virtual Commencement special for your family. We hope your family can celebrate your graduate in whatever way is most meaningful to you.

Career Center Support

As students wrap up classes for the semester, planning for summer internships or jobs may be on their minds. The Career Center shares six practical steps that students can take to advance their career development during this time. Review these with your student and encourage them to schedule a phone and/or video appointment with the Career Center to outline next steps.

Summer Classes

It was announced on April 3 that all UP summer courses that begin on May 18, 2020, will be offered online. A decision regarding the format for most of the 6-week courses offered in Summer Session II, which begins on June 29, will be made on or before May 1, 2020. Please take a moment to read the full update. Summer classes through UP are a great way for your student to get a head start, catch up on their classes, explore an internship, or complete a minor.

UP Admissions Updates

Like our UP seniors, many high school seniors have been greatly impacted by COVID-19. No decision weighs on their minds more than the “college decision,” and it can be hard to envision where they will be next year without visiting campuses in person. If you have a high school senior who is considering UP, encourage them to check out the Virtual Experience page! The enrollment confirmation deadline for first-year students has been extended to June 1, 2020.

Pilots Give Back

As we shared last month, with the outbreak of COVID-19, UP wants to focus on #PilotsGiveBack, a celebration of what it means to be a Pilot — on what service, leadership, and faith mean in the face of great challenges. Read some of the inspiring stories coming in from the UP community and learn how you can help. Together we all add UP!
