Comics at Guadalupe!
This fall, 2nd and 3rd grade students at Guadalupe Elementary are defining themselves through comics. Working closely with Streetside Teaching Artist Lawrence Lindell, students are creating four-panel spreads that answer questions like “who are you?” “what are you grateful for?” “what do you want to bring to the world?” and “how do you define yourself?” First, students write captions and create drawings to illustrate the answers to these questions. Justin answered, “I am strong, I am little, I am life,” while Tamara said, “What I want for the world is no guns.” Next, they ink and color their comics with pens and markers. Soon, their collection of comics will be compiled into zines. The workshop will culminate with a zine fest, where students will table and show off their comics to their classmates, teachers, and family members.
Teaching Artist Lawrence Lindell’s passion for comics is contagious in the workshop. Since 2012 he has been a part of the zine and underground comics community, which takes him across the globe sharing, reading, exhibiting and presenting his work in workshops, lecture halls, and schools. As an artist, musician, and the creator of From Black Boy With Love Part I and II,  Lindell’s art focuses on changing the political and social climate of today’s world. His work tackles themes including patriarchy, misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia and anti-blackness. In his Streetside workshops, Lawrence promotes self-love and self-exploration.
Fall Campaign
Update
Did you get our fall fundraising campaign letter? If not - check it out HERE.
After we sent the letter, students from our Treasure Island YMCA classroom became featured artists at the Youth Art Exchange's SF Youth Arts Summit. Streetside students like Kathia (right, with Teaching Artist Chelsea Carl) attended the event at SOMArts with their family, and Samiyah's portrait won third place in the visual arts category! We're so proud of these young artists.
THANK YOU to all who have donated to the campaign thus far! We're off to a fast start, having raised $9,560 of our $15,000 goal. We'll need the full support of our Streetside family if we're going to reach our goal. Your gift will support bold youth voices in our Spring programming. Please give today.

Streetside Shines at the
Guild Conference
On November 16th-18th Streetside participated in the National Guild for Community Arts Education's 80th annual conference in San Francisco. Not only did Streetside staff attend the conference, but they sat on the host committee, helped to facilitate a session on K12 partnerships, coordinated an exhibition of local student work, AND Streetside student Maddison's self-portrait was featured on the conference booklet cover! It was a good way to connect, learn, and share our work with community arts colleagues and peers from around the country.

Victoria Story
"In my projects I've really learned how to describe my emotions and actions through great detail, and I've started to like the idea of writing stories about different topics." - Victoria
Brianna's Movie
Brianna's favorite thing from her Streetside workshop was when her movie was playing on the big screen in front of an audience. She hopes her stop-motion animation will inspire people to stop bullying.
Josue's Portrait
Josue's self portrait dives into his connection with the school garden. "This is my secret hiding spot. I come here when I'm sad, lonely, and sometimes when I'm happy too."
A Surprise Visit
Some of you go WAY BACK with Streetside Stories. But nobody goes back as far as our recent visitor: Seth Levy! Seth and his brother James founded Streetside Stories in 1989. He now lives in Maine, and on a recent trip to San Frnacisco he made special time to visit the Streetside office with his son Solomon. It was great to hear Seth's stories about the founding years of the organization, and it was fun updating him on recent developments in the 28-year Streetside Stories journey. Thank you, Seth for launching such an amazing organization!
