Hello Red Wolves:
There is lots of exciting news before we start the fall that I’d like to catch you up on.
College of Veterinary Medicine
Our project to serve the state of Arkansas with our own College of Veterinary Medicine received approval this past week from the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The A-State veterinary college will have a huge impact on our local and state economies, and our current state residents who are forced to leave the state to earn their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees can stay home – and save tuition costs. Part of our report to the coordinating board included establishing an in-state DVM tuition rate below the national average. Even our out-of-state tuition is below the national average. Congrats to our Founding Dean Glen Hoffsis and our campus CVM task force led by Dr. Len Frey and deans Mickey LaTour and Jennifer Bouldin. The next steps for A-State CVM are at the national level.
Judd Hill Farmers’ Market Expansion
Speaking of Dean LaTour, we are set for a ribbon cutting at the expansion of the Judd Hill Farmers’ Market in August. Having an indoor teaching and outreach space will make a dramatic impact on how the Judd Hill Farmers’ Market and the College of Agriculture can impact our community and our students. Look for some new updates related to the A-State Meat Lab soon.
2023 Summer Commencement
Also just around the corner is Summer Commencement on August 12. The Registrar has announced the windows to pick up caps and gowns. And faculty, you’ve got updates in your email as well.
Move-In Month is Here
It’s the start of “move-in month” at A-State. I can remember back when all the students would roll in on a campus over one day or weekend, but now we start welcoming new students for the entire month of August. Aside from our fall sport athletes, new and returning students in the Sound of the Natural State band are arriving soon, along with students who are participating in the fall sorority rush. I know everyone on campus is ready to have our students back, and the Jonesboro community is very excited as well.
Prepping for Fall 2023
Our campus has been busy this summer preparing for fall 2023, and I want to highlight three areas for our students and parents.
|
-
We have made a significant investment in additional campus security. We want all of our Red Wolves to feel safe here at their home away from home. The campus security committee has added a significant number of new video cameras, many of them mounted on new emergency call poles. Our Facilities Maintenance staff has finished the next phase of new lighting, notably adding new LED lights to Dean Street. And along with the campus security committee work, UPD has added enhanced monitoring of vehicles entering campus.
- This fall, expect to see better coordination of our student services, especially to assist students with mental health needs. There are more details to come, but with the first full academic year of the Wilson Counseling Center ahead, we want to make our students feel comfortable and supported.
-
And to have that home feel, students need places they can come together. We will have more places for community. The student study lounge area that soft-opened last December is almost ready for 24-hour access. We are very proud that the NPHC lounge also in the Reng Student Union is set to open this fall.

That’s all for now – I believe we will have some more great news to share at the start of the fall semester. Until then, I want everyone – students, families and the Jonesboro community – to check out the schedule for our opening week on campus. Wolves Up Week is a great chance to get involved with campus, and I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at events that week.
