The Hungry Traveler’s
Guide to Atlanta |
Reviewers from the Michelin Guide recently arrived in Atlanta, prompting excitement and eye rolls among locals (better late than never). The city’s dining scene reflects the dynamic metropolis itself: diverse, ambitious, glitzy, gritty, Southern. Cuisine from every nation can be sampled on Buford Highway (check out chef Eddie Hernandez’s favorite Mexican spots on the strip). The enclave of Decatur, home to this year’s James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: Southeast, also claims one of the South’s best beer bars. You can pick up a cult-favorite burger at a gas station in Dunwoody, flower-encrusted chevre from a cheesemonger in Armour Yards, and a paloma with a view in West Midtown—or take a stroll on the BeltLine through multiple neighborhood dining scenes. You can’t tackle it all in one day, of course, but you can certainly try with this twenty-four-hour guide to eating in Atlanta.

While in Atlanta, pay a visit to the Garden & Gun Club, our restaurant and bar near the Braves’ Truist Park at the Battery Atlanta. The intimate space is perfect for cocktails and a dozen oysters, a supper full of Southern hospitality, or our Club Burger before a ballgame. Get more info and see the menu.

Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Every August my family comes together from all over the country. Our requirements for choosing a location? A spot with stellar food, pretty views, and ways to be active. This year, they came to me for a “staycation” on IOP. We rented houses within Wild Dunes and took to the beach to walk, bike, lounge, surf…you name it. In the evenings, we gathered at these don’t-miss spots:
|
-
Tarvin Seafood: If you’re going to spend time in the Lowcountry, hosting a Lowcountry boil is a requirement. We stocked up on Old Bay seasoning and headed to the Shem Creek docks to purchase local shrimp and sausage. Miss Paula, as the dock’s shrimp boat is affectionately named, is family-run and pulls in the freshest shrimp and fish the region can offer. I love chatting with the Tarvin family members—you also might see their sweet pelican friend who hangs out at the store and loves to be fed extra shrimp.
-
Islander 71: Not only does this (somewhat new) restaurant overlook the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, but the atmosphere inside and out is unmatched. If you’re feeling fancy, order a Dirty Goat Man Martini and she-crab fries at the chic seventies-inspired inside bar. The front lawn welcomes dogs and children and hosts live music and oyster roasts. Gather your group at the rooftop bar for sunset and a Nauti Mistress Margarita (ask them to make the watermelon version!).
-
The Windjammer: As G&G’s Back Porch Sessions director, I see the inside of a lot of concert venues. What sets the main Windjammer stage apart is that it is nestled between a comforting dive bar and the ocean, so you can listen to bands of all genres with your toes dug right in the sand. We were lucky enough to catch The Vegabonds and Moon Taxi—making for two lively Saturdays.
