Happy Thanksgiving, Canopy supporters! We are so grateful you are here. 🤗 We have a lot of reasons to give thanks this holiday season, and this newsletter is a wonderful reminder of that. We’ll keep it short and sweet, so you can get back to that turkey. 😉🦃

100 Men of Dane County Helps Bridge the Gap |

We are grateful (and elated) to announce that Canopy Center’s Oasis sexual abuse treatment program was awarded a $91,000 grant from 100 Men of Dane County! This grant will help bridge the funding gap created by VOCA (not familiar, read more here) and allow us to more holistically support survivors of child sexual abuse through parent psychoeducation and group therapy - two services which are proven to:
|
- Reduce the amount of time a child spends in therapy
- Help reduce feelings of isolation
- Increase the likelihood of positive outcomes
|
These offerings will also allow us to cast a wider net - scooping up victims who may be waiting to receive services.
Here is our submission video, for a peek inside Oasis’ services:

How Columbia County Showed Up to Support CASA |
|
|
The Portage VFW donated their space; area businesses sponsored and donated generously; and community members showed up to play bingo and support our Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program which serves children and youth - many of whom are in foster care, but all of whom are under the protection of the courts. 🤗
CASA relies on volunteers to meet with children weekly, gather information and present that information to the court, to help judges make informed decisions about each child’s well-being and future placement. We are grateful to have some of the best, most dedicated volunteers in Dane and Columbia County; and while volunteer advocates allow us to keep costs down - there are still costs associated with running a CASA program.
What do fundraisers, like “Bingo Night!,” support?
|
- Volunteer Recruitment & Background Checks | Canopy Center recruits, screens, trains and supports over 100 volunteers each year; one background check costs the agency approximately $50.
-
Comprehensive Training | CASA Staff conduct multiple trainings per year for new volunteers - each new volunteer is required to complete 30 hours of initial training; with opportunities for continuing education each subsequent year of service.
-
Case Management | Matching CASA volunteers with children based on their skills, expertise and availability; monitoring case progress; reviewing reports to ensure accuracy, clarity and adherence to legal requirements; and attending court hearings with volunteers to present information and advocate for each child’s best interest.
-
Community Collaboration | Building relationships with child welfare agencies, social service providers and other community organizations to ensure each child receives the support and resources they need.

Delta Beer Lab is a wonderful supporter of many nonprofits in the Madison community - on Tuesday, December 10 from 4-8pm they are donating all of their net profits to Canopy Center. It's our job to get as many people there as possible! Tuesday is Vinyl Night at Delta, so if you have a record you can bring it and they will play one side. If not, you can just come and enjoy the music, have a drink (beer or soda), grab a pizza or pretzel, and hang out!
It’s just happy hour - so patrons and supporters can stop in at any time. Grab and go beer and soda also count toward our total for the evening!
RSVP on Facebook to receive a reminder. 🍻
