A Note from Leadership - Raed Alnajjar
I recently joined the MISHC Coordinating Center Leadership as a Co-program Director and am excited to be writing to you for the first time. I look forward to continuing to foster the collaboration between cardiologists and CT surgeons, working to reinforce the value of partnership in structural heart care. I’m also eager to develop best practice guidelines for structural heart procedures and share MISHC’s work and experience at the national level.
This issue of the newsletter includes a report on ways in which MISHC and BMC2 are outperforming the nation on key critical-to-quality measures. We also shine a spotlight on the quality improvement goals achieved by Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital to increase KCCQ and NYHA documentation and our meeting summaries link to a variety of resources available to help you as you work to better the lives of your patients.
We thank you for your continued support of quality initiatives and your partnership with us in all you do. Wishing you an incredible summer!

Spotlight on Corewell Health East Dearborn Hospital
Corewell Health East Dearborn Hospital's structural heart team is committed to doing everything possible to improve outcomes for the patients in their care. The group respects the roles of each player and fosters effective communication. “There is a strong collaboration with all team members," said Dennis Hoy, MSA, BSN, RN, Director, Cardiovascular Services. "The team follows the model of high reliability with open and effective communication where anyone can speak up, with special attention when something may not seem or sound right.”
Previously, the Structural Heart Program recognized opportunities in multiple areas related to documentation. These included the 5-meter walk, the MISHC KCCQ, and the NYHA heart failure class documentation VBR goals.
Read our blog to learn about the projects they put in place and how the results they achieved exceeded collaborative goals.

Demonstrating the Power of CQIs
A recent analysis of MISHC and BMC2 data compared to national registry data partners revealed a variety of critical-to-quality measures on which Michigan participants excel. These measures include the prescription of guideline-recommended medication at discharge, increased referral to cardiac rehab, decreased length of hospital stay, decreased rates of transfusion, and more.
Patients in Michigan clearly benefit from the strength of the collaborative work of MISHC through improvements in care and outcomes. Read our full article on these measures, and view the corresponding graphs, on our blog.
