Welcome to the weekly UTLC Newsletter supporting teaching and learning at UNCG.

This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching.
Welcome back! This week's teaching tips feature important updates, resources, and reminders to help start your semester off strong.
-
Building community. Teaching and learning are relational endeavors, so it is important to build community early and often in your courses. Check out this activity from our What's Working video series to get your students talking and connected in the first week of class. We also recommend incorporating a welcome survey (template for UNCG instructors) to get to know your students and see where they may need support throughout the semester.
-
Syllabus template. The UNCG Syllabus Template contains required and recommended statements and sections to include in your syllabi in line with the UNCG's Syllabus Policy. We recommend reviewing the template each semester to make sure your syllabus contains this important information that should be shared with all students at UNCG.
-
Addressing the AI (artificial intelligence) elephant in the room. Over the last year, AI has made it clear that it is here to stay. Instead of assuming how students are using this evolving technology, talk about AI in your classroom and share how technology is a tool for learning rather than a replacement. It is critical to have conversations about the ethical and scholarly uses of AI with students and to acknowledge both its opportunities and limitations. Think about adding AI language to your syllabus, and stay tuned for more updates and resources on AI from the UTLC throughout the semester!
-
Find your well-being here Canvas Commons Module. As part of creating a culture of care at UNCG, this brief module gives students information and access to an array of well-being resources. A video tutorial is available along with written step-by-step instructions. Consider adding this to your courses this fall and letting students know how to use this resource in the first week.
Have a great semester!

| Special Provost Announcement: Register for ACUE micro courses this Spring
|
The ACUE program has been an essential tool in UNCG’s broader response to the evolving needs of our students and celebrating our campus culture of teaching excellence. Our next offering of ACUE teaching micros and the Fostering a Culture of Belonging (FCB) course will begin in late January 2024.
-
ACUE Teaching Courses: ACUE teaching micros are seven-week courses that introduce effective teaching strategies and highlight the benefits of reflective teaching practice. Complete all four courses to receive the American Council of Education (ACE) Certificate in Effective College Teaching.
-
Fostering a Culture of Belonging: FCB is open to faculty, staff, and Graduate Teaching Associates. The course is organized around job function pathways allowing you to explore areas of inclusive engagement through your campus role. The course aims to equip participants with skills for navigating inclusion and diversity in your work and as a member of UNCG’s community.
Contact Laura Pipe (lmpipe@uncg.edu) directly if you would like to register for any of the January offerings, ask any questions, or receive additional information. Your participation in these programs is not just an investment in your professional growth but also a significant contribution to UNCG. To thank faculty and staff who have completed the ACUE micros, the Provost is providing participants with a $250 professional development stipend per completed micro course to be used prior to the end of this academic year. We look forward to seeing you enrich your teaching experience with ACUE's offerings.

| Save the date for Spring 2024 Coffeehouses
|
CoffeeHouses are a space to gather with colleagues. No set agenda, just coffee (or tea), snacks, and great conversation. This spring, Coffeehouses will be co-hosted and held in academic units across campus. As always, coffeehouses are open to all instructors at UNCG regardless of location or co-hosting department. Consider bringing a reusable coffee mug in order to make our efforts more sustainable!
