Taking care of yourself is a key part of thriving at Duke. Halloween weekend can be a great time to de-stress and have fun. If you’re planning a particularly social Halloweekend (or not), we encourage you to stay mindful and safe, too. A few small choices can make a big difference in keeping things safer and more fun for everyone.
Stick with friends: Whether you’re out in Durham or on Franklin Street, traveling in groups is always safer. Don’t leave friends behind.
Plan your route: Know where you’re going and how you’ll get back. Check lighting, crosswalks, and traffic patterns.
If you plan to stay on campus: Check out Spiketober in Cameron or Freewater’s screening of the Halloween classic Scream. There are more events to explore below!
Call for help if you’re worried about safety or someone’s wellbeing: It is important to remember, this weekend and any time, that Duke’s amnesty policy means when students call for help in situations involving alcohol, drugs, or hazing, they can do so without worrying about disciplinary action for their own substance use or, new this year, their role as an active bystander or witness in hazing-related incidents. Please see below for additional support resources available to you 24/7.
Support Resources:
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call Duke Police at 919-684-2444 (or 9-1-1 if off-campus). For urgent student matters, help is available 24/7:
Duke Emergency Department: A level one trauma center that offers 24/7 immediate care|2301 Erwin Road
We hope you have a safe, fun, and spirited weekend! Remember, your safety matters, and these resources are here if you need them.
