Robert Casier Faculty Lecturer Alcove dedication May 3

Forty years ago, Dr. Robert Casier delivered the first Annual SBCC Faculty Lecture, setting the standard for every faculty lecturer since then. Join us on Friday, May 3, at 4 p.m., as we dedicate space at the Faculty Study Room in the Luria Library to commemorate the late Dr. Casier and the others who have been selected each year since 1979 for this high honor. Several past lecturers will be present. Light refreshments will be served.

Your opinions matter! The college needs to hear from you
As part of our efforts to achieve and sustain a healthy, diverse equity and inclusion culture for employees and students at SBCC, you are asked to participate in SBCC’s Employee Equity & Inclusion Survey. Your answers will be anonymous. This survey is being conducted by Quantisoft, an independent survey company, on behalf of SBCC. Quantisoft has no way of knowing who you are. The survey deadline is midnight on Wednesday, May 15th. Your time and comments are sincerely appreciated. The survey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. If you are a classified employee or manager, your manager will give you 45 minutes during your work day to complete the survey. Chromebooks will be available if you need to use one. If you are a faculty member, you will be given 45 minutes of flex credit to complete the survey.

Outstanding Classified employees of the 2018-2019 school year were announced at the April 25 Board of Trustees meeting. The Classified Employee of the Year is Maria Luisa Ramirez, Facilities Assistant in the Facilities and Operations Department. Honorable mentions include Culinary Arts Lab Teaching Assistant Roberto Lopez Carillo and Faculty Resource Center Senior Development Specialist Karen Shannon. Also honored were Math Department Lab Teaching Assistant Allison Chapin and Maintenance Technician Jose "Pepe" Acosota (not pictured). Read more about each of the honorees... Congratulations to all!

Dr. Helen Benjamin receives American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Leadership Award

In April, Dr. Helen Benjamin was honored at the Annual Convention of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in Florida, where she received the AACC Leadership Award. AACC’s Leadership Award, an annual tradition since 1982, is presented to individuals whose accomplishments and professional contributions to the community college field have been outstanding.

Ignacio Ponce, Associate Professor of American Sign Language (ASL) in the School of Modern Languages, will be the 41st Annual Faculty Lecturer.

Dr. Raeanne Napoleon elected as the next Academic Senate President
| |
Congratulations to Dr. Napoleon who will become the President-Elect effective the day after Commencement and serve in that role for the 2019-2020 school year. She then becomes the Academic Senate President following Commencement in 2020 and serves as Academic Senate President from 2020-2022.
Academic Senators were also elected this Spring. Congratulations to elected Senators Laurie Vasquez, Jennifer Hamilton, Annette Cordero, Devona Hawkins, Robbie Fischer, Jennifer Betancourt, and Robin Goodnough.

On April 15, twelve faculty members were honored for becoming fully tenured professors at a ceremony held in the college’s Gourmet Dining Room. The instructors were hired as tenure-track faculty in the fall of 2015. Their fully-tenured positions begin in fall 2019. Congratulations to:

Superintendent/President SearchAt their April 11, 2019 meeting, the Board of Trustees reviewed the timeline for selecting the permanent Superintendent/President. The timeline calls for a start date of January 1, 2020, for the new Superintendent/President. At their May 9 meeting, the Board is expected to select an executive search consultant. Campus constituency groups have been asked to identify representatives to serve on the screening committee. In addition, the Board will select two (2) community members to serve on the committee as well as one (1) student from noncredit School of Extended Learning. Updates about the search will be posted to the SBCC website.

Plant Sale
Each spring people look forward to the annual Environmental Horticulture Department's plant sale, to purchase beautiful flowers, fruit trees, succulents, vegetables and more.
