IFTSSs Taking Off in Europe
| |
| When ICAO first introduced and encouraged operators to introduce Fatigue Management Systems back in 2011, they did so with a lot of consideration to the design, in order to create healthy drivers for change. It was widely recognised that regulatory flight and duty time limits will never fully align with our knowledge of human physiology. A given set of rules will for some operators, will allow high risk roster patterns to be planned and flown, while at the same time disallow productive and safe patterns. At times, compliance with a rule, in combination with operational constraints, may even lead to higher (!) fatigue risk for the crew. In order to encourage operators to ‘patch up’ these rule weaknesses (which often comes at a cost), ICAO cleverly introduced a possibility for increased operational flexibility that could 'pay' for the changes needed to reduce fatigue risk. This higher flexibility is an approval to operate beyond the regulatory limits (a derogation) - provided that the operator can prove that this is done at the minimum at an equivalent level of safety. In Europe, EASA is now referring to these derogations as Individual Flight Time Specification Schemes (IFTSSs).
After a somewhat slow start, more and more operators are now actively improving their FRMSs and thereby also applying for derogations. The EASA process for approval and the current applications processed, are all openly reported on the EASA web page for Flexibility Provisions. A derogation can dramatically affect an operator's ability to reduce fatigue risk with maintained or reduced cost. At the upcoming Jeppesen Users Conference in Lisbon, there will be a presentation focused on summarising the approval process as well as methodology and tools for quantifying fatigue risk supporting these applications. More to come on this in a News Flash later this fall. If you are a Jeppesen Crew Solution or FRM customer and have not yet recieved an invitation to Lisbon, please contact your Jeppesen sales representative.

Air Nostrum to Use Advanced Mathematics
| |
| Air Nostrum, a regional operator in Spain with headquarters in Valencia and operating almost 50 aircrafts, has decided to implement Jeppesen Crew Pairing, Rostering and the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM).
”Producing best possible crew rosters is crucial from both a financial perspective as well as for attracting and retaining crew”, says José Montesinos Blasco, Financial Controller at Air Nostrum. ”With the advanced optimization technologies present in the Jeppesen crew solutions, we expect to achieve improved roster quality, overall lower costs and a significantly shorter planning process”, he adds.
”We are delighted to see Air Nostrum take advantage of the power of our crew solutions and platforms for analytics”, says Margarita Jiménez Vidal, Flight Operations Sales Director at Jeppesen.

Improved Integration in CrewAlert Pro
| |
| An increasing number of apps and crew management solutions send crew pairings and rosters directly to CrewAlert Pro for analysis by the Boeing Alertness Model. With the recent release of CrewAlert Pro 4.1.4 via the App Store, integration is now also available via file. The new file extension is associated with CrewAlert on Apple devices, making it easier than ever to create, share and store complete scenarios, fatigue reports and modelling of incidents or accidents. The standard format includes sleep/wake logs, assessments, PVT results as well as demographic data and the rostered activities.
Regardless of the crew management solution used by your airline today, you are now capable of exporting data over file into CrewAlert Pro and can perform powerful analysis, what-if's and quantifications using BAM. Or why not attach a file to your roster publications/updates so that crew better can predict, prevent and reduce fatigue risk? Welcome to drop us an email on frm@jeppesen.com for more information.
CrewAlert Pro contains an unlimited version of the Boeing Alertness Model and allows for performing fatigue predictions, data collection, developing fatigue mitigation strategies, analysis, fatigue reporting and contains many other features. CrewAlert Pro is available on the iTunes App Store for a one-time fee of around $30.

Boeing AnalytX at Farnborough
| |
| As the airline industry continues to evolve and innovate, the ability to capture complex data and translate it into meaningful insight for airline operators is critical. Boeing and Jeppesen has invested significantly in developing Boeing AnalytX to capture predictive, descriptive and prescriptive analytical data. These analytics are able to be transformed into business intelligence that can be applied to your operations to improve performance, safety, and economics. Jeppesen CEO, Ken Sain (in the picture above), recently had an opportunity to present the power of Boeing AnalytX while attending the annual Farnborough International Airshow. He focused on how analytics can be applied to an aircraft to deliver substantial value to the operation.
Boeing AnalytX offers three interrelated categories of analytics enabled products and services customers may easily mix and match to meet needs and goals. - Digital Solutions – a set of analytics enabled software applications addressing the needs of crew and fleet scheduling, flight/mission planning and operations, maintenance planning and management, and inventory and logistics management.
- Analytics Consulting Services – a group of aviation, business, and analytics professionals who are ready to help customers improve their operational performance, efficiency, and economy.
- Self-Service Analytics – our newest category, that opens up the data behind the digital solutions for customers to explore and discover new insights and opportunities using Boeing provided analytics tools. One example here is Jeppesen Concert.
This video provides more information about Boeing AnalytX and the benefits of leveraging aircraft data and intelligence. If interested in learning more about how Boeing AnalytX can elevate your operations, please contact your Jeppesen representative.
