- Halloween weekend will bring a number of exciting events for students both on campus and in Isla Vista: a free concert, silent disco, roller skating, movies, Dia de Los Muertos celebrations, and much more! We hope you will encourage your student to look for announcements in their university email and to respect the community's wishes to "Keep it Local, Keep it Safe" by not inviting out of town visitors or hosting large gatherings.

The college years are a time when many students begin to explore or expand their civic engagement. This can take many forms, from registering to vote, to taking part in a community event, or participating in a protest or demonstration to express views on a current campus issue or global event. Recent and tragic world events have impacted many students and have also spurred an increase in demonstrations on our campus. As a parent, you can provide a listening ear or encourage your student to reach out to campus resources if they need support.
As a government entity, the University is required to uphold free expression protected by the First Amendment. We recognize that such expressions are sometimes offensive, scary, and/or hurtful. We recently sent students information about our expectations for student conduct on campus and resources for student support. Please encourage your student to review this information and make use of the resources – including bias response, conduct reporting, law enforcement, and mental health support – as appropriate. Many students also find it helpful to gather with like-minded peers through campus or local organizations or to speak with a staff member in their residence hall for support. For more information on freedom of expression, please visit the Dean of Students website.
When there are demonstrations or protests on campus, our demonstration response team personally attends to monitor the situation. The team works closely with campus partners (including UCPD) to help ensure the safety of all members of our campus community. We take issues of safety extremely seriously. Please encourage your student to contact the appropriate office to discuss any incidents of bias, misconduct, or illegal behavior.
