Message from the Interim DirectorAs we settle into the new year, I hope that you are feeling refreshed and reinvigorated for an exciting year ahead. I am looking forward to catching up with you all in person over the coming months. I extend my warmest congratulations to our members who have recently received funding for their research as well as those who have received promotions in 2022. You can read about the many achievements of our community below.
In February, I look forward to showcasing and celebrating science as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023 - you can see the many events that the University is hosting on campus here. Please feel particularly welcome to join us for any of the queer science events running throughout the festival, starting with the launch of CLOAK on Thursday 16 February.
Finally, we are currently recruiting internally for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Research Officer to join our team. I encourage you to circulate this to any colleagues who may be interested in applying.

Welcome Gaurav - our Senior Research Officer for NanoHealth! Dr Gaurav Singhai was born in the small town of Nowrozabad in central India. He completed his Bachelor's in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Master’s in Biotechnology from Rajiv Gandhi Technical University, India. Gaurav has extensive experience working in both academic and industry settings in India and Australia, where he moved to in 2011. He completed his PhD in DNA nanotechnology in 2021 at the Flinders Institute for Nanoscale Science & Technology. Gaurav loves travelling and learning from his surroundings. His journey from working in life sciences to molecular sciences to nanoscience and learning from his peers has fortified his original passion for new knowledge and his quest for translational research, from lab to the people. Prof Anita Ho-Baillie awarded $2.78 million to develop perovskite-silicon solar cells Congratulations to Prof Anita Ho-Baillie for securing research funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to develop perovskite-silicon solar cells. These tandem solar cells have a higher theoretical efficiency than silicon solar cells, making them a promising candidate for commercial solar cells. This funding will enable Anita and her team to improve the durability of perovskite-silicon solar cells under thermal and light stress. Congratulations Anita! Read more here.

Prof Fariba Dehghani and A/Prof Craig Jin receive funding for Tech Central researchTwo University of Sydney projects have received funding from the NSW Government's Tech Central Research and Innovation Infrastructure Fund to advance R&D infrastructure at Tech Central. Prof Fariba Dehghani, co-lead of the Alternative Protein Application Centre (APAC), received $2.2 million to develop technology that supports the manufacturing and processing of alternative proteins to meet the increasing global demand for protein in the food industry. A/Prof Craig Jin will lead the Human Augmentation Laboratory (HAL), which has been granted $1.4 million for the development of state-of-the-art research translation infrastructure for augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics. Grant success for Dr Natalie HolmesCongratulations to Dr Natalie Holmes from the Faculty of Engineering for receiving the following grants:
- Faculty of Engineering Linkage Project Seed grant with the Australian Museum in partnership with Prof Julie Cairney and Dr Matthew McCurry (Australian Museum). Project title: 'An Atomic Scale View of Prehistoric Life'.
- International Synchrotron Access Grant from ANSTO in partnership with Dr Xiaoxue Helen Xu (UTS). This grant will enable them to visit the Advanced Light Source, Berkeley, for the project ‘Smart Nano-Engineering Strategies for Bioelectronics and Solar Cells’.
