Business Exit Planning Expert Laurie Barkman Launches The Business Transition Handbook
Tepper School of Business adjunct professor of Entrepreneurship and CEO of SmallDotBig, LLC Laurie Barkman recently launched her new book, The Business Transition Handbook, which is being sold on Amazon. "Laurie Barkman has written an indispensable guide for entrepreneurs who are facing the decision of what is next for their business and life's work. The Business Transition Handbook is a must read for those entrepreneurs", says Dave Mawhinney, Executive Director of the CMU Swartz Center.

The host of the Succession Stories podcast is also an EIR at CMU's Swartz Center and an instructor with the Corporate Startup Lab, a CMU Swartz Center Initiative.

James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellow Spotlights: 
Christopher Elston, Poets & Quants MBA Best and
Brightest Class of 2023
Recent Tepper School of Business MBA graduate Christopher Elston, has been awarded the Poets & Quants MBA Best & Brightest, class of 2023. Chris has been an invaluable member of the CMU Swartz Center, having immersed himself into the Entrepreneurship ecosystem at the start of the Tepper MBA program, applying and being accepted as a James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellow (2020-21), becoming president of the Graduate Entrepreneurship Club (GEC) and an MBA partner for the
99 Tartans investment fund.

Idelic CEO Nick Bartel Awarded Leadership in Private
Company Governance Award
Tepper School of Business MBA alumnus and Idelic CEO and cofounder Nick Bartel was recently awarded  the Leadership in Private Company Governance award at the 2023 Director of the Year Awards ceremony, presented by the NACD Three Rivers Chapter. Nick is a 2014-16 James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellow.

The May 2023 Customer Discovery Kickstart Program Cohort Has Been Selected
The CMU Swartz Center's Project Olympus Incubator has selected its May 2023 cohort for its Customer Discovery Kickstart, a program for early-stage startups to explore the feasibility of their business ideas. 

Startup teams in the four-week program will learn about the fundamentals of customer discovery, including conducting customer discovery interviews, and will receive coaching from experienced Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. Teams include graduate and undergraduate students, and alumni from many Carnegie Mellon University schools and departments including the School of Computer Science, College of Engineering, Mellon College of Science and Heinz College. Two of the cohort members, Ram Potham (SCS - bottom photo) and Deniz Mehmet Birlikci (SCS, top center) are also Innovation Scholars.

Applications are open for the next cohort beginning June 14th. The deadline to apply is May 31st.

Duo’s Taqueria Opens as Full-service Mexican
Restaurant From Duolingo
Duo's Taquería, which opened in June 2022 on the ground floor of Duolingo's headquarters on Penn Avenue via a now-replaced outdoor walk-up counter, has reopened as a roughly 2,600-square-foot space featuring a bar, dining and event areas that can seat up to 130 people who are looking to indulge on authentic cuisine inspired by food from Mexico City.

The White House Calls Pittsburgh 'A Hub for Innovation'
As It Moves to Boost Investment

The city of Pittsburgh was one of five sites that the Biden administration designated as workforce hubs to encourage more public and private investment in new and innovative industries. Pittsburgh was singled out for its emerging robotics, biomanufacturing and clean energy industries. Related article

CMU Qatar Innovation Scholar Yusufbek Nasriddinov
Wants to Pay It Forward After Graduation

Yusufbek Nasriddinov, a new graduate from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and the first Innovation Scholar from the school, was recently celebrated in a LinkedIn post by the Qatar Foundation. Yusufbek is working alongside his friends on building an educational financial platform that's both Sharia-compliant and competitive. The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is a private, non-profit organization that serves the people of Qatar by supporting and operating programs in three core mission areas: education, science and research and community development.

Apply for the Customer Discovery Kickstart Program

The Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship’s Project Olympus Incubator announces the Customer Discovery Kickstart program, designed for early-stage startups to explore the feasibility of their business ideas. The second cohort will begin on June 14, 2023. This program helps startup founders to determine product-market fit by connecting them with potential customers and industry stakeholders. CMU students, staff and alumni are eligible to apply. 

Apply for the June 14 - July 12 cohort by May 31, 2023!
