Smith's winter break hours

The break between fall and winter terms means fewer people on campus and less access to the student union.

In order to reduce operational and staffing costs during this period, Smith Memorial Student Union will be open to the PSU community (those with regular 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. badge access) only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday during the period Saturday, Dec. 17, to Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

Regular building hours and public access hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. M-F) will resume Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.

Those PSU staff members with 24/7 access will be able to reach their offices as usual and special access for events will be arranged through the Campus Events & Student Union office during the break. The University Market will be open for students and staff from 10-2 M-F.

Smith Operations staff often will be in the building from 10-2 M-F and on-site for scheduled events. For after-hours maintenance issues you can call the Facilities Work Center until 5 p.m. weekdays (503-725-2349). For safety issues and maintenance emergencies after 5 p.m., call CPSO (503-725-5911).

If you have any other access or building issues, please reach out to Smith manager Mercedes Youngston

Closed for Thanksgiving

A reminder: Smith will be closed to the PSU community (those with normal 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. badge access) starting 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The building, and Portland State University, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25.

PSU staff members with 24/7 access will be able to reach their offices and the building will return to normal badge access on Saturday, Nov. 26.
Trained alpacas climb the steps at Hillsboro Stadium for an appearance at a Portland State football game.
How do they do get there? Whether appearing in the Smith ballroom or at Hillsboro Stadium our frequent alpaca visitors prefer to use the stairs. These specially trained alpacas from Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas offer "friendship and a warm touch to help alleviate loneliness, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and elicit smiles." (Honest, that's what their business card says.) Watch for their next visit to a Smith event! But don't hold the elevator for them.
See the money! Get scholarship tools and tips

Take part in the Women’s Resource Center’s annual “Get That Money!: Scholarship Workshop” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, in the La Casa Latina Student Center (Smith 228).

Hosted by the WRC’s Peer Mentorship Project and Leena Shrestha from the Advising Center the workshop will review writing skills and tools, tips for scholarship searching, accessing resources for support, and the challenges faced when writing scholarships.

Can’t be there in person? Register for the live stream and/or access to the recording and event materials.

Middle-school students bowl in the Gameroom during a recent party event.
Plan a Gameroom party for the holidays

The Viking Gameroom in Smith is taking reservations for special events but end-of-term and holiday dates and times are going fast.

Take advantage of this on-campus amenity that features pool tables, video gaming and bowling by reviewing the event information on the Gameroom webpage and submitting a request form. The Gameroom will be scheduling reservation events over the break between terms — a great chance to enjoy some time out of the house, apartment or dorm room with family and friends.
