We are set to celebrate the achievements of our graduates at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 16, as proud families and friends gather for the 2023 December commencement ceremony. Approximately 620 students will cross the stage to receive their degrees. The ceremony, about two hours long and presided over by Chancellor Corey A. King, will be held at Kachel Fieldhouse in the Williams Center.

Kudos to the UW-Whitewater forensics team for winning 13 awards at the UW-Whitewater Alumni Classic Tournament. Freshman Emmalee Empey (persuasion), sophomore Megan Ehle (dramatic interpretation) and senior Abby Frey (poetry) earned individual tournament championships. Other members of the winning squad include Kensington Narkis, Juniper Oldenburg Garcia, Justin Rietmann, Grace Palmer, Amelia Moody, Terri-Alise Mims and Sofia Guha.
Kudos to UW-Whitewater Career Services and Kim Apel, technology and employer relations coordinator, for earning awards from the Wisconsin Association of Colleges and Employers (WI-ACE). The department won the Innovation Award and Apel claimed the Outstanding Professional Award. Read more »
Kudos to three faculty members who attended the National Communication Association Conference on Nov. 16-19 in National Harbor, Maryland. David Beyea, assistant professor of communication, presented his paper “An Exploratory Examination of the Self-Influencing Effects of Static Avatars on Twitter.” Corey Davis, professor of communication, was selected to serve as respondent and chair on the Mass Comm Division Panel: Mass Communication Theory, Methods, and Measurement. Amal Ibrahim, associate professor of communication, presented her paper “The Potential of AI Tools in Creative Writing and Skills Development in Communication Education.”
Kudos to Dom Schlueter for accomplishing a remarkable feat by breaking the Warhawk men’s swimming record on the 200-yard freestyle. He touched in 1:40.60, besting his time by 0.34 seconds and breaking the Warhawk school record by 0.23 seconds. Schlueter finished first overall. Read more »
Kudos to Jo Ann Oravec, professor of information technology and supply chain management, who will be presenting at the international conference Rethinking Injuries: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Harm, Safety, and Society. Organized by the Injury Studies Research Network at Johns Hopkins University, the conference will take place in Baltimore on March 7-9, 2024. Her presentation is titled “Representations of Deaths and Injuries Associated with Robots and Autonomous Entities.”
Kudos to Ruth Hansen, assistant professor of management, who co-authored an article, “Amid ‘Checkout Charity’ Boom, Some Americans Are More Likely to Be Impulse Givers Than Others,” that led a recent weekly newsletter for The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Kudos to Brooke Winchell, associate professor of special education, who was recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children, Division of Leaders and Legacy as a “Bright Spot.” The award reflects Winchell’s extensive work to prevent and respond to the maltreatment, i.e., neglect and abuse, of children with disabilities.

Yesenia Cervera, assistant professor of women’s studies, was awarded a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission as a co-primary investigator for “¡Presente!: Documenting Latinx History in Wisconsin,” a collaboration with the Wisconsin Historical Society and community partners. This bilingual, digital edition is dedicated to highlighting the stories of Latinx communities in Wisconsin. Read more »

|
The last game before the end of the semester is a showdown against Lawrence University on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium in the Williams Center. Their last matchup ended with a score of 97-71 in favor of the Warhawks. Fans should have high expectations for this exciting and competitive game as Lawrence looks to knock off the nationally ranked Warhawks. If not able to attend the game will be streamed live on the WIAC Network.
