CROP RESIDUE - SHOULD YOU TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT?
Harvest season doesn’t always end with grain harvest. Every year, farmers are faced with a choice: Take fodder off the field or leave all the crop residue in place.
When it comes to farming, every decision can impact both the immediate and long-term health of your land. Here are some considerations to think about when deciding whether or not to remove crop residue from the field.

MYCOTOXINS: BEWARE OF THIS HIDDEN DANGER IN FALL HARVEST

When it rains, it pours, and unfortunately for much of the upper Midwest, this was a reality in spring and early summer of 2024. In Wisconsin, it seemed like every passing rain cloud dropped an inch or more of rain, and those clouds just kept coming. Combine record moisture in some areas with high humidity and clouds, and it was the perfect storm for slugs, molds, and diseases to infiltrate our crop fields and cause damage. While some of these pests have a brief window of damage, mold and fungi can be the gift that keeps on giving.
Even when mold growth ceases, they can leave behind potentially toxic compounds in mycotoxins, that can create many issues for livestock.

MEET MANUEL PENA - REGIONAL DAIRY EDUCATOR
Manuel is the new Regional Dairy Educator for Sheboygan, Fond Du Lac, Dodge, and Ozaukee Counties. He is originally from Duitama, a small city in Colombia, 3 hours north of Bogotá, the capital city. He received his bachelor’s degree on Animal Science at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. In the last semesters he worked for a national breeding association. After graduation he did an internship at NC State University working on Dairy management and another one at University of Florida working on forages and nutrition. Working at UF he linked with a Clemson’s University professor who later would be his adviser on his master’s and PhD degrees. His research has been focused on ruminal nutrition and forage management for the dairy industry. Manuel is looking forward to giving back to the community, help as much as possible with their issues as much as to learn from their success and work together with other specialists.

In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities and sports but also listening to music, reading and writing and even though he is not a great player he enjoy chess a lot.
