More about the Intersection of Family Planning and Harm Reduction
~ Contributed by Stephanie Spitz
A review of more than 1,000 maternal deaths found that factors related to behavioral health conditions — including suicide and drug overdoses — accounted for 23 percent of pregnancy-related deaths. The Biden Administration’s blueprint for combating maternal mortality has called for efforts to expand health services available to pregnant and postpartum people. Among other efforts, the federal Health Resources and Services Administration is funding a maternal mental health hotline and training OB/GYNs, midwives, doulas, and other maternal health providers to screen for substance use and other behavioral health problems. Now, more than ever, we need to think innovatively and holistically to partner with and utilize organizations that can better assist our pregnant and parenting patients. This includes, but isn’t limited to, working with doulas, harm reductionists, and peer recovery support specialists. Everything we do should be grounded in compassion and to help people in their community to live a happy, fulfilled life as they define it. We can't afford to be siloed anymore when it comes to helping people and saving lives. It takes all of us, which is why I'm so proud to be a part of this collaborative cross-centers event. This Café is made possible by the collaboration of the Clinical Training Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health, the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence and the Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center.
Would you like a sneak peek about some conversations we'll be having throughout the Cafe? Well - you're in luck! Our own Shannon Roberts interviewed Casey Johnson, a harm reduction specialist, and Russell Campillo, a peer educator, who share about their personal experiences engaging with clinicians.
