| | Integrative Pain Care Pilot Program |
Vermont Medicaid is partnering with the UVM Medical Center in a pilot program that will allow up to 100 Medicaid members with chronic pain to participate in integrative, holistic treatment—such as reiki, massage, and acupuncture—through UVM’s Comprehensive Pain Program, a clinical arm of the Osher Center for Integrative Health.

The 2023 Health Equity Summit, “Closing the Margin: Avenues to Health Equity,” was held at UVM October 29–30. The event featured presentations and workshops emphasizing social, environmental, economic, and structural factors and concluded with a call for comprehensive approaches and the moral courage to transform health care.

Diego Adrianzen Herrera, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, has been appointed associate director of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the University of Vermont Cancer Center. In this role, he will help to oversee the Cancer Center’s plan to enhance diversity, coordinating programs that advance a culture of inclusion across the four pillars of the Cancer Center: research, education, community outreach, and clinical care.

A recent study led by Professor of Psychiatry William Copeland, Ph.D., and supported by UVM researchers, indicates that children who appeared resilient during childhood were still at risk of poorer mental health, physical health, and financial outcomes in adulthood. The study challenges the notion that childhood resilience is common and explores possible solutions to this crisis via public health initiatives.

Congratulations to clinical and translational science Ph.D. student Adam Sprouse Blum, M.D., assistant professor of neurological sciences and pipeline investigator in the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health, who was recently elected president of the Northern New England Neurological Society. The society brings together medical professionals with an interest in neurology.

The Northeast Regional Laboratory Staff and Core Directors chapter of the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities held its annual meeting October 18–20 at the University of Vermont. Julie Dragon, Ph.D., and Roxana del Rio-Guerra, Ph.D., led this showcase of team science and research collaboration, which included tours of the Firestone Medical Research Building, lectures, and networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities for core facility professionals.

The annual Benefits Open Enrollment period for 2024 is November 13–December 1, 2023. This is the only time of year when benefits-eligible employees can enroll in and/or change benefit elections for the coming year. You do not need to re-enroll if you do not want to change any of your benefits—except with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), which require annual re-enrollment. Review your current benefits in PeopleSoft and plan for calendar year 2024 now.
