Welcome back to another edition of The DOM Insider. I hope you have had the opportunity to soak up the sun, explore all that St. Louis has to offer, and create lasting memories with loved ones. With the summer drawing to a close, it is time to welcome the new faculty and trainees to the university for the 2024-2025 academic year.

We’re proud to announce that 147 of our faculty were recognized by the 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctors® list. This honor is based entirely on merit, reflecting excellence in clinical care and interpersonal skills. These individuals exemplify the highest standards of healthcare and we are honored to have them on our faculty.
Our DOM spotlight story features Janet Lee, MD, Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, the research and innovative clinical programs she’s overseeing aimed at addressing lung injury and host defense mechanisms. With over 18 years of experience and distinguished leadership as a Director of the Acute Lung Injury Center of Excellence, Dr. Lee is set to bridge basic science discoveries with bedside clinical care.

Lee Joins WashU to Build Clinical Programs for Lung Injury and Host Defense |
Janet S. Lee, MD, Chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Selma and Herman Seldin Distinguished Professor in Medicine, Professor of Pathology and Immunology, and physician-scientist from the University of Pittsburgh, joined WashU in 2023 to develop innovative clinical programs aimed at addressing lung injury and host defense mechanisms.

Celebrating the Achievements of Professor Emeritus Stuart Kornfeld |
Stuart A. Kornfeld, MD is renowned for his pioneering research in glycobiology, particularly his work on the pathways involved in oligosaccharide biosynthesis, processing, and maturation. His significant contributions include elucidating how lysosomal enzymes are transported from their synthesis sites to their functional locations within lysosomes, essential for cellular macromolecule degradation.

| Dr. Luis F.Z. Batista received DOD and Siteman Cancer Center Awards |
Luis F.Z. Batista, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Developmental Biology, WashU Division of Hematology, Member – Center for Genome Integrity, received grants from the Department of Defense as well as Siteman Cancer Center for his work to uncover novel mechanisms related to telomerase dysfunction in bone marrow failure and pre-malignant patients.

| Dr. Jesus Jimenez Received Harold Amos Faculty Development Award |
Assistant Professor of Medicine Jesus Jimenez, MD, PhD has been announced as a recipient of the 2024 Harold Amos Faculty Development Award. Dr. Jimenez also recently received K08 funding for his project “CD40 Immunotherapy Effect on the Cardiac Immune Landscape and Response to Myocardial Disease”.

| Dr. Megan Noonan Received ASN KidneyCure Fellowship |
Megan Noonan, PhD, WashU Division of Nephrology, received the American Society of Nephrology, ASN, KidneyCure Ben J. Lipps Fellowship. Dr. Noonan’s research aims to uncover novel mechanisms of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) progression via dysregulated alternative splicing.

Physician Well-Being Index (WBI) |
As part of our commitment to wellness, the Health and Wellness Program in the Department of Medicine has partnered with the Departments of Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Radiology to offer the Physician Well-Being Index (WBI), a 9-question online self-assessment based on validated research conducted by the Mayo Clinic. Information will also be provided to help you access resources to improve wellness and reduce burnout.

IDEAS at DOM welcomes Dr. Kai Jones to leadership team |
Kai Jones, MD has joined the IDEAS at DOM Leadership Team as the Co-Director of the Internal Medicine Fellow/Postdoc Initiative. Dr. Jones completed her fellowship, residency and medical school training at WashU and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She recently joined the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipid Research as an Assistant Professor. Read more.

Welcome to the new academic year! We are excited to announce our presence on the Department of Medicine website. |
We hope to better highlight the ongoing efforts of our incredible patient safety team within the department. Please explore our website. We have Operations Executive Councils (OEC) focused on ambulatory and inpatient issues in the Department of Medicine. These councils have representation from each clinical division. Each division also has a Patient Safety Officer. Please get to know these representatives and elevate safety and operations issues that you encounter to them so we can continuously improve the care we deliver and the environment in which we deliver it.
