Greetings Colleagues, April 2024 Newsletter
This month I’m excited to spotlight the eLearning branch of the Center for Faculty Excellence. Here are some fun facts about this talented group:
-
Our 6 instructional designers and 2 technology specialists all have master’s degrees and experience in the application of pedagogical principles, educational theories, and instructional strategies to design and develop courses.
-
Our 5-person Exam Team, led by Senior Exam Developer Rachel Rentschler, MPH, has expertise in supporting faculty and students in navigating our Creighton-supported exam technologies, from Examplify/ExamSoft to Examity and more.
- Phil Beagle, our Media Designer, assists faculty in graphic design (e.g., technical drawings, image development) and videography and photography for instructional and publication purposes.
- Learn more about our team by viewing their introductory videos.
Leading our eLearning team is the talented Kate Johansen, MS. Kate is is the director of the team as well as an instructional designer with expertise in digital accessibility, and brings excellent communication, collaboration, and charisma to her leadership role.
In addition to working directly with faculty, the eLearning team regularly collaborates with Student Accessibility Services and the Division of Information Technology. They provide updates and representation to the Committee on Computing and Academic Technology (CCAT), which is chaired by the Associate Vice Provost of the CFE. CCAT serves to connect faculty, IT, University Libraries, and administrators to advise on academic technologies and related policies.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our eLearning team to support you in your faculty role – they’re ready and willing!
Lou Jensen, OTD, OTR/L.
Associate Vice Provost-Interim, Center for Faculty Excellence

Corresponding with Students via Assignment Feedback |
BlueLine is equipped with multiple lines of communication with students, including the ability to correspond within the feedback area on assignments. Not only is this a great opportunity for instructors to leave individualized feedback privately to students, but students can also privately respond to instructors with additional questions or requests for clarification. To ensure this process works as designed, there are a few key points to remember:
| Respondus Lockdown Browser in Classic vs New Quizzes |
An important difference to remember about using Respondus Lockdown Browser with BlueLine quizzes is how students access the browser.
- Classic Quizzes: Students need to close all other programs, locate and launch Lockdown Browser, THEN navigate to their BlueLine quiz.
- New Quizzes: Students begin in their standard browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.), navigate to and open the BlueLine quiz, then Lockdown Browser will automatically launch
Providing accurate instructions and support about Lockdown Browser before a quiz can help avoid potential problems. We recommend having students complete a practice quiz with Lockdown Browser early in the course to familiarize themselves with the process and ensure students have correctly downloaded the program. Support for Lockdown Browser can be found in both the Faculty and Student guides on BlueLine.
