Dear Colleagues:
We are seeing progress in student success, and that reflects the care, creativity, and commitment you bring to your work every day. Through strategic investments in faculty, staff, academic advising, academic support programming, and course redesign, we are beginning to see encouraging signs that our collective efforts are making a real difference for students.
First to second year retention increased 1.4% this past year. It is important to note that the largest increases were seen in student groups that have traditionally been challenged in the college environment:
|
- Retention of students with a high school GPA of 2.0 - 2.49 increased 14.8%
- Retention of African American/Black students increased 5.7%
- Retention of first-generation students increased by 3.6%
|
The percentage of students who were on probation or academically dismissed in their first year has steadily decreased over the past two years:
|
-
First time in any college (FTIAC) students on probation or Jeopardy of Dismissal at the end of their first term dropped 2.7% from fall 2023 to fall 2024. The drop is 4.8% when comparing fall 2022 to fall 2024.
- Academic dismissals after the first year of enrollment dropped 1.7% from 2023-24 to 2024-25. The two-year drop is 2.1% when comparing 2022-23 to 2024-25.
|
Efforts that supported these increases in student success include:
|
- The addition of 14 academic advisors, which led to an average 42% increase in the number of African American/Black students and 13% increase in the number of first-generation students who met with an advisor.
-
An over 150% increase in proactive outreach campaigns to students by advisors to fully engage students in advising as an opportunity for support. Some colleges, such as Nursing and Engineering, specifically targeted outreach to students in foundational courses who were showing signs of needing support at midterms. Students who met with an advisor because of this outreach had a .15 higher term GPA and a 5.3% higher credit completion rate than students who did not.
- The increase in the number of course sections with Structured Learning Assistance resulted in reductions in course DFW rates. For example, BIO 120 students in an SLA section had a 7% lower DFW rate than those who did not. Similarly, students in an SLA section of BMS 212 had a 12% lower DWF rate than those who did not.
-
Over 90% of students who participated in tutoring in fall or winter were retained to the next term.
|
We are on track to continue seeing increases in student success through:
|
-
Enrollment of nearly 1,000 students in 44 sections of EDH 181: Navigating College Success; this course is open to any first-year student and required for all those entering GVSU with a high school GPA below 2.79.
- Participation of 521 FTIAC students in first-year learning communities, where data show participants earn higher first-year GPAs and achieve higher retention rates.
-
Structured Learning Assistant support provided in more than 100 course sections.
- Student success and learning-oriented redesign of five large multi-section courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
|
Thank you for the many ways you contribute to this shared momentum. Together, we are creating a learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive, and where our mission as a relationship-rich, student-centered university comes to life. I will continue to keep you informed as we assess our impact, and I am grateful for your partnership in this work.
With gratitude,
Jen

Caring for Our Lakers: Integrated Student Success Initiative |
The Integrated Student Success Initiative is a comprehensive approach to enhancing student experiences through coordinated academic policies. Rather than treating institutional policies in isolation, this initiative recognizes how various requirements collectively influence student outcomes. In collaboration with multiple campus departments and student representatives, educational modules were developed to address key policy areas that impact student success. Click on the links below for resources pertaining to upcoming academic events. For questions or additional information about this initiative, please contact Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Felix N. Ngassa.

This semester, Fall Break is scheduled for October 19 - 21, which includes a Monday and Tuesday. As you build out your course and departmental calendars, please keep the following in mind. Although Fall Break days are not university holidays, they are comparable to Spring Break in that classes are not held and other activities outside of teaching are suspended. As such, there should be no faculty meeting held during Fall Break. In terms of courses, no assignments may be due, and no quizzes, tests or exams may be administered, except for the limited programs that have received an exemption from Fall Break.
