| WEEKLY WORDS TO PONDER:
“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

Student Spotlight: Bhawana Gurung
Bhawana is pursuing a dual major in marketing and fashion studies, with a focus on design. She will graduate in December 2024. Bhawana was born in Nepal and moved to the United States at age nine. She proudly states that she is a Bhutanese Nepalese first-generation student. She is the founder and president of the IUP South Asian Student Association (SASA). The organization’s mission is to unite and promote awareness of South Asian countries through cultural discussions, education, celebrations, and service initiatives in the IUP and Indiana communities. As president, Bhawana organizes and gives presentations at the group’s weekly meetings and assists with event planning, finances, and social media. Tentatively planned SASA events include Diwali and Holi celebrations and an Asian organization banquet. Bhawana is a member of the IUP Fashion Association, IUP Marketing Association, and IUP Women in Business. Her many volunteer services include advocacy for refugees and work in a soup kitchen. Bhawana was pleased to appear in one of the IUP “ Get in the Grove” campaigns. We thank you, Bhawana!
Staff Spotlight: Heide Witthöft
Heide is a faculty member in and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, where she teaches German language, culture, and literature. She has published a book and several articles and has given presentations on topics such as literary mirror scenes, German fairy tales, and film director Roland Emmerich at local, national, and international conferences. Heide serves as the advisor for the German minor and the foreign language certificates in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. She is especially pleased to be part of the committee that organizes the Foreign Language Diversity and Inclusion Series (FOLDIS), which has hosted campus events focusing on creating cultural awareness. Heide is the advisor for the German Club, a culture club that welcomes all members of the IUP community. In addition, she serves her students, colleagues, and the university as a member of several committees at the department, college, and university level. We thank you, Heide!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
