Dear Eagle Nation:
I am pleased to share that our collective efforts continue to elevate our beloved Coppin State University. In just two years, we have reversed a declining enrollment trend that has persist for more than a decade. Thanks to the work and leadership of our Enrollment Management team, as well as many across campus, this fall we experienced a five percent increase in our overall student headcount. This means for Fall 2023, 2101 students selected Coppin State as their university of choice.

This growth is a direct result of greater collaboration across campus, stronger marketing, new recruitment strategies, and better admission’s policies. The procedures we have implemented has us trending in the right direction.

The five percent increase in overall enrollment is accompanied by double-digit growth year-over-year in every student demographic, including:
  • 20% increase in new first-time students;
  • 35% increase in new transfer students;
  • 53% increase in new graduate students;
  • a 74% retention rate for first-year students as they enter their second year. This is record high for Coppin State and elevates us above both the national and state retention average for public colleges and universities.
More students, college counselors, elected officials, alumni, and others are taking notice of what we are building here at Coppin State. We have harnessed the Coppin State experience in our brand new view book, produced by the Division of Institution Advancement, and collaborators across our community.
The new viewbook gives prospective students and their families a colorful, panoramic view of our multicultural and multigenerational student body, our research expertise, commitment to academic excellence, creativity, innovation, spirit, and individualism. Interacting with the viewbook gives a better understanding of the extraordinary experiences and opportunities that help shape the student experience here at Coppin State. We invite you to explore the view book and share it with someone who could be a good addition to Eagle Nation.

Coppin State University is one of two HBCUs to receive a $500,000 grant from the Food and Drug Administration Office of Minority Health and Health Equity to develop a partnership that improves representation of people of color in clinical trials.
Joan Tilghman, Ph.D., Interim Dean of the College of Health Professions spoke to The Baltimore Sun about the grant and the research it will support, saying input from the community will be critical. “Getting their perspective, getting their input and helping them to feel that they really are important in whatever initiatives we arrive at — to me, that’s critical,” she said.

Experiential Learning with Nonprofit Leadership at Coppin State University

Coppin State University students studying nonprofit leadership recently visited the Greater Mondawmin Coordinating Council (GMCC), to see concepts they are learning in the classroom, put into action. Scholars met the board of GMCC, including GMCC Director, Eli Lopatin and Board President, Adeline Wheless-Hutchinson, and observed a board meeting to better understand board governance.
