Understanding the new VUMC political activities policy. VUMC recently created a Political Activities policy to clarify its expectations for employee political engagement during work hours. Here are key things leaders need to know:
- Employee participation: Employees are allowed to participate in lawful political activities. However, these should be conducted on personal time and shouldn’t suggest VUMC support. Employees can request flexPTO for these activities via the usual time off request process.
- Prohibited activities: During work hours, employees shouldn’t be involved in political activities. This includes demonstrating, counting votes, circulating petitions, soliciting votes or contributions, conducting opinion polls, fundraising, and/or displaying campaign materials.
- Professional conduct: VUMC doesn’t tolerate harassment or discrimination based on political preferences. Any employee who feels harassed or discriminated against due to their political preferences should refer to the HR – Anti-Harassment, Non-Discrimination, and Anti-Retaliation policy.
- Political discussions: While not encouraged, employees can discuss politics at work if the discussions are respectful and consensual.
- Dress code: Employees shouldn’t wear or display political messages during work hours. Leaders and managers will ask employees to remove items that violate these requirements.
- Use of VUMC resources: The organization’s equipment and resources shouldn’t be used to create or distribute political materials.
- VUMC-sponsored activities: Sometimes, VUMC might approve political events if they are beneficial to our mission or supports academic excellence.
Please visit Policy Tech and review this new policy fully.
Understanding and following this policy ensures that we maintain a respectful, inclusive environment at VUMC.

Total reward statement available to employees in Workday.
Last week, VUMC launched a powerful new tool to help show employees the full extent of the rewards and benefits they receive as an employee. The tool is called a total rewards statement.
Through the total rewards statement, employees can better understand the many ways VUMC invests in them. The total rewards package includes base salary, other compensation, and the employer-paid contributions for employee benefits (e.g., health care coverage, retirement benefits, and life and disability insurance, among others).
Employees now can view and print their personalized information in Workday. Encourage your employees to review their total rewards statement in Workday today.
The statement has three parts: Base Pay, Additional Compensation and Benefits. The Additional Compensation section is only visible if you had additional compensation during 2023.
Statement located in Workday Employees can find their statement in Workday under the Compensation section from their Employee Profile homepage. The guide shows employees how to read the statement and descriptions of each section. Download the Total Reward Statement quick reference guide off the Training Hub to learn more.
