Good Morning Indian Country placed first, second and third for best Newscast Student Division in the Native American Journalist Awards. Good Morning Indian Country is a Native, student-led weekly news and information program that broadcasts live to its Facebook page.

Alexandra Blye and Karen Middleton placed second in the Editorial/Opinion Category of the Student Division. Blye wrote the article, "A Visit to Haskell," and Middleton took the photographs as attendees of the 2022 Native Storytelling Workshop. Both students returned for the 2023 workshop in June.

Eudora Times picks up 25 awards: Eudora Times staffers Jack Denebeim, Sara Maloney, Will Crow and publisher Teri Finneman picked up 25 awards from the Kansas Press Association in June. Maloney is also one of 61 early-career journalists to be welcomed to the prestigious Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship program. The yearlong fellowship kicks off in August. Finneman and Melissa Greene-Blye, a partner in Good Morning Indian Country, will discuss the Eudora Times and Good Morning Indian Country at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 7, at the National Press Club.

Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot's Research and Capstone classes from the IMC master's program and program director Dr. Matt Tidwell were hosted by Heart to Heart International at their headquarters in Lenexa, Kansas, on July 19. The organization implemented several class recommendations for event and donor communication enhancements from their final presentations and shared the successful

| results with the students. Heart to Heart International is one of the nation's largest organizations providing access to health care in under-resourced communities and disaster situations.

Jayhawk journalists to be inducted into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame
Several J-School alumni, a professor emeritus and current J-School professor are among the journalists who will be inducted in the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame on Friday, Nov. 3, at the Cyrus Hotel in Topeka.
The Jayhawk inductees are:
Susanne Shaw, former full professor, graduate director, news advisor, associate dean and J-School graduate. Shaw retired as a full professor.
Patricia Weems Gaston, current Lacy C. Haynes Professor and former Washington Post editor
Jeannie Kygar Eblen, former hometown news specialist for University Relations and member of the William Allen White Community Foundation Board

Twenty-five faculty and graduate/undergraduate students from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications are presenting their research studies and creative projects at the 106th annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), which will be held at the Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C. on Aug. 7-10, 2023. This group combines for seven research, teaching and service awards.
Their projects cover topics including diversity education and virtual reality, international communication, digital advertising, LGBTQIA+ community and social media, climate change communication, health communication and news, sports media, and media law. The School also won five research paper awards and one teaching award. Here is the list of presentations and awards by the school's faculty and graduate/undergraduate students.

Associate Professor Carol Holstead's book review "Mag Men Charts The Successes (and Failures) of Legendary Designers Walter Bernard and Milton Glaser," was published in the Fall-Spring 2022-2023 issue of the Journal Magazine Media.
Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Byle's article "War Chief, Friend of the President, Prohibitionist: Would the 'Real' Little Turtle Please Stand Up?" was published on Taylor & Francis Online. The article is for American Journalism, co-authored with fellow Miami Tribe of Oklahoma scholar John Bickers.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman, Assistant Professor Vaibhav Diwanji, Assistant Professor Melissa Green-Blye, and Chloe Martens, j'23, recently had their paper "Is it Smart to Be Thrifty?: How Advertisers Navigated Message Strategies During the Great Depression," accepted by Journalism History.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman and Ryan Thomas (Washington State) recently had their paper, "Blood on their Hands vs. A Foolish Prank: The British Press, Media Ethics, and a Deadly Hoax on the Royal Family," accepted by Journalism History.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman recently had her research in progress "Frenzy Over Frances," about media coverage of first lady Frances Cleveland accepted for presentation at the American Journalism Historians Association.

J-School student earns spotlight as 'KU Swift Society' founder |
Student Alexis Greenberg is the founder and president of the KU Swift Society, a Taylor Swift fan club that boasts more than 500 followers on social media. Since becoming an official student organization in January 2023, it has held a movie night, social outings and crafting events and provided volunteer opportunitites. Greenberg and the society were highlighted by the Kansas City Star and Fox 4 News ahead of Taylor Swift's stop in Kansas City for her Eras Tour.

| Students head to Big 12 Media Days |
Junior Emily Baldwin and freshman Kace Spears helped cover the Big 12 Media Days in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, earlier this month. This fall, Baldwin will be a co-producer of The Playmakers, with plans for Spears to be the show's technical Director.

Deadline is Aug. 18 to apply for Kansas Association of Broadcasters Student Ambassador Program, which is designed to increase awareness about the KAB on high school and college campuses, enhance connections between students and Kansas broadcast stations, increase participation in the KAB Student Broadcast Awards and KAB scholarships and continue to assist students aspiring to careers in broadcast. Ambassadors will be paid for their work. Here is the full criteria to apply.
