Each year as the academic year winds to a close, I want to thank all of you who participated in our faculty development programming this year. We are wrapping up our second exciting year of a new comprehensive vision of faculty development. We will continue building on that vision in 2023-2024. As Mary Emmer, MS, Faculty Development Specialist noted, we offered over 55 programs this year through collaborative partnerships with: CFE Faculty Associates & Faculty Grant Teams, University Assessment Professional Development Team, Research & Scholarship, University Libraries, IDEA Hub, and Academic Service-Learning.

Thank you to all who contributed your assessment data and who work continuously to improve your teaching and our students’ learning. As well, your expertise in online learning continues to grow!
I also thank the members of the University Assessment Committee and the Committee on Computing & Academic Technology.
All of those achievements were made with the amazing team in the CFE! They have contributed their expertise, enthusiasm, energy and work all year to help all of us and therefore our students succeed.
There is more to come next year! In the meantime, I hope all of you find at least a bit of time to rest and rejuvenate this summer. Our team is here over the summer, ready to help.
Thanks again!
Deb Ford, PhD
Associate Vice Provost-Center for Faculty Excellence

eLearning: Spotlight & Resources |
|
|
| eLearning Staff Spotlight: Phil Beagle, eLearning Media Designer |
I started at Creighton in January of 2003 as a Graphic Artist in the once great and mighty OITLR department. Prior to Creighton, I worked for an internet solution company as a graphic designer for 6.5 years. I started at Creighton by creating graphics for publications and online course collateral for faculty. I eventually incorporated photography shortly after starting and eventually videography into my role. Higher Ed is growing at a record pace with new technology emerging at lightspeed, which I find very exciting. I am always searching for new, creative “hands-on” technology with the goal of enhancing learning experiences. I embrace the opportunities to share experiences and knowledge with everyone. I love working with the Creighton community. I find the people and the level of support with the thirst for knowledge amazing. My role originally was supporting SPAHP, but has evolved to all schools. I grew up as a military brat and have traveled all over, my father retiring here in 1991 after 28 years in the Air Force. In my off time, I love being a dad and spoiling my two beautiful children, Landon (16), Cambria (15), and their dogs, Oliver (Maltipoo), and Winnie (Pomeranian), playing Apex Legends, listening to music and the occasional movie (cosmic horror and sci-fi).

Best Practices for Online Videos: |
Videos are an excellent way to bring a face and a voice to online courses. Brame (2015) notes the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning to support the use of both visual and auditory processing channels to effectively facilitate learning. However, more is not always better when it comes to videos in online instruction. Studies show that videos are most effective when they are:
|
- Short and information is sorted into logical segments (6-15 minutes) so as not to overwhelm learners’ cognitive load
-
Simple: leave out music, big effects, complex backgrounds that distract from the content
- Used as an active learning tool: include guiding questions before the video content, or integrate questions directly into the video

Faculty Associates Program: |
For nearly 25 years, the annual faculty development programming continues to evolve. Faculty Associates facilitate programs designed to enhance student learning; promote the scholarship of teaching and learning; and enhance effective teaching and learning, research, scholarship, and leadership.
This work has been accomplished thanks to the many faculty and staff who have served as Faculty Associates in semester-long work/reading groups, pedagogical sessions, workshop series and other events.

Assessment Program Recordings |
Learning is at the center of the assessment process at Creighton. We pride ourselves in producing graduates who obtain a "degree of difference" - who carry the imprint of a value-based education. To do so, faculty are encouraged to join their colleagues in assessment learning opportunities. Three assessment programs were held this academic year. Click on the title to watch the recording. Contact Sarah Oliver, Program Outcomes Specialist, for any questions and support during this process.
