May 2023
Dear Volunteers,
We have many exciting events underway at the Gardens! A new summer light show will debut at the Conservatory of Flowers on May 12. The light show, Photosynthesis, will begin at approximately 8:30 pm, transforming the building into a canvas of colorful light art. This new digital imagery, installed by Lumigeek, will be synched with brand new music composed by Tim Digulla. To celebrate this occasion, a special after-hours event, Night at the Conservatory, will take place on the evening of May 12 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. If you're not able to catch the show though, Photosynthesis will continue each night beginning 30-minutes after sunset.
On Saturday, May 20 we will celebrate Gala for the Gardens. This will be our first year celebrating and raising funds collectively as the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, uniting the beloved Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, and San Francisco Botanical Garden. This year we will honor Delle Maxwell, our outgoing board chair and Gardens volunteer of more than 20 years - and - Director of Education Annette Huddle, who first began her journey at the Gardens as a volunteer in the Children's Garden and now leads educational programming. Thank you to both Delle and Annette for your commitment to the Gardens and advancing our mission to connect people to plants, the planet and each other. I hope you will be able to join me in celebrating these two wonderful individuals and our Gardens by either attending the event or volunteering with us.

Slices of Joy
- A tremendous thank you to volunteers and staff who joined for our Meet the Trees Walk at the Botanical Garden! A special thank you to Karen, Catherine, Ruth, Tracy, Keith, Linda and BJ, who led talks and organized the event - and also to our wonder Collections and Conservation team, along with Library team who helped answer questions and guide research.
- In celebration of Poetry Month, 200 middle school students and 30 staff members, chaperones, and faculty walked from SF Day School to the Botanical Garden to present their original work and favorite poems throughout the Garden. Special guest readers Dean Rader, Briana Grogan, Laura Woltag, and Darius Simpson also presented their work in the Celebration Garden. This is the second year at the Gardens for this event and they hope to continue this tradition for future years.
- An ADA path will be added at the Botanical Garden to increase access to the California Native Plant Garden and new nursery. Work in the South Africa section will repair or modify existing paths from the parking lot and County Fair Building. Steps to preserve plants with high conservation value have been taken and the plantings will be enhanced following the completion of the path construction.
- We're excited to debut a new way to volunteer at the Botanical Garden! If you or someone you know would love to help out with gardening but hasn't been able to join a weekly Green Team assignment, we are now hosting a monthly Saturday assignment in partnership with SF Recreation and Parks Department. To learn more about how to volunteer at the Botanical Garden with RPD on Saturday, May 27 from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm, visit this link.
- The American Indian Cultural District (AICD) is excited to share their recent newsletter with our volunteer community. This includes news and updates for April - July, including an interview with Mary Jean "MJ" Roberston, a Cherokee Nation Citizen and treasurer of the Cherokee Society of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and journalist and radio host for San Francisco's KPOO since 1973. In addition, we're hosting a collaborative public program developed by AICD, the Gardens, and the de Young museum on Saturday, May 27 and Saturday, July 8, Beyond the Landscape: A journey of plants and people at SFBG. To learn more about this workshop and to register for this public event, visit this link.
- Gardens in the News: It was great to have NBC California Live at the Botanical Garden last month to talk with Director of Programs and Partnerships Jamie Marie Chan, Ed.D. in celebration of National Gardening Day. Director of Collections and Conservation Ryan Guillou is quoted in this interesting San Francisco Chronicle piece about spring weather.
