March 2026 MSA Newsletter |

|
March is Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Awareness Month, an opportunity to share information about this rare neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by a collection of symptoms including impairments in speech, walking and balance, difficulty with movement and coordination, bladder dysfunction, and problems regulating blood pressure. By raising awareness of MSA, we hope to improve diagnosis and access to specialized care, encourage more research on MSA, and support people living with MSA and their care partners.

Multidisciplinary Clinic for Atypical Parkinsonism |
The UC San Diego Multidisciplinary Clinic for people with atypical parkinsonism was established in 2025 to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals living with multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and corticobasal degeneration (CBD)—rare, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative movement disorders. Led by neurologist Dr. Katherine Longardner, the clinic aims to enhance health-related quality of life by addressing both motor and non-motor symptoms and by supporting the complex psychosocial needs of people living with atypical parkinsonism and their care partners. Patients are evaluated during a single visit by an integrated team that includes specialists in neurology, urology, speech and swallow therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, and pharmacology. In addition to clinical care, the clinic provides a collaborative environment for engaging patients and care partners in clinical research.
Referral and review of medical records are required prior to scheduling.
