Beale Street in Memphis has long been the place to enjoy great blues and libations, but it’s far from the only game in town. Here are five must-see Memphis venues where visitors can find original music and culture off the Beale Street strip.

Boca Raton, Florida. Usually people flee Boca Raton, the South Florida city known for its Addison Mizner–influenced architecture, in August. That’s precisely when I like to make my hometown return, as I did last month with my four-year-old in tow. The restaurant waiting lists shorten, the beaches empty, an A1A drive meanders smoothly. We made the most of having it to ourselves with the following activities.
|
-
Get into nature: I like to start my mornings in Boca with a beach jaunt before the sun reaches full strength. We stopped for a bite to go from 2nd Street Deli and Bagels before setting up a breakfast picnic at South Inlet Park, where there’s excellent boat watching. After an ocean dip, we visited nearby Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, home to a tropical butterfly garden and trails shaded by its namesake tree. Pausing here lets me appreciate the native surroundings juxtaposed by an ever-developing landscape.
-
Cool off: The Boca Raton Museum of Art, located in mixed-use Mizner Park, offers reprieve from the heat with more than four thousand rotating works of art and an impressive collection of photographs. Afterward, we popped into locally owned Subculture Coffee across the street for a post-museum pick-me-up (a cold brew for me).
-
Lounge luxuriously: I could stay with family, but I much preferred our plush accommodations at the Boca Raton. The main draw at the resort, which comprises five hotels, was the newly added Harborside Club, where you can choose from three pools (one just for adults) as well as a lazy river—all with Intracoastal views. Lunch at the resort’s airy Harbor House hit the spot with a texturally pleasing crispy rice–spicy tuna appetizer and ample salads, while a DIY sundae bar served in a tackle box ended the meal on a sweet, if showy, note—indulgent, yes, but that’s Boca.
