The Incomparable Crescent City |
With its vibrant nightlife, rich history, unmatched food scene, and tropical vibe, New Orleans draws travelers from all over the world. Visitors often hit the French Quarter, taking in the narrow streets crammed with Creole architecture, but there’s plenty to see in the other districts. “The spirit of New Orleans, after all, can be found throughout its far-flung neighborhoods, which host an eclectic selection of restaurants, nightclubs, and various curiosities,” writes contributor Wayne Curtis in G&G’s Guide to New Orleans, which includes must-visit NOLA destinations as well as lesser-known gems.

Richmond, Virginia. It only took me forty-eight hours in Richmond to fall in love with the city. With its easily walkable and lively downtown scene plus myriad great restaurants and outdoor activities, it felt like a place I could see myself living in someday—or at least going back to again and again. Here were some of my recommendations for a quick weekend trip.
|
-
Have a bagel and a beer. We started our Saturday at Nate’s Bagels, a colorful little corner spot in the Fan neighborhood. Their house-made bagels come topped with the works: sausage and tomato jam (Ol Virginny); vegan sausage and tomato jam (New Virginny); lox; pork belly; you name it. You’ll need that sustenance if you dare venture onto the beer trail (the city has more than forty local breweries). We only had time to hit Ardent Craft Ales, a sunny patio in Scott’s Addition with great beer and creative, not-your-average-bar-food sandwiches.
-
Get your steps in. Between the shady streets and the town’s thriving park system, there are tons of great places to walk in Richmond. Our favorite was Belle Isle, an island park in the James River connected to downtown by a pedestrian suspension bridge. Walk, jog, or bike the wooded trails; fish the quarry pond; or pack a picnic to enjoy on the rocks overlooking the James River’s rapids and the city’s skyline.
-
Take in the art. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art is world-class, but you don’t have to spend an afternoon in the museum to absorb all the art that Richmond has to offer. The city is home to over 150 murals that bedeck the city in color and personality. Use a map to seek them out, or take a stroll and see what you stumble upon.
