Faculty Self-Care and Mental Wellness
We all have “mental health”.  The question is, do you take care of yours?  Your mental wellness can work for and not against you.  Everyone faces challenges related to mental health, but stigma and lack of knowledge keep many of us from talking about it and getting the support we need.  In this session, we will discuss what happens when you do and do not take care of your mental wellness.  You will also learn ideas for self-care, where to find additional resources, and how to get support if you need it.  Additionally, you will be provided with many resources for creating healthy routines, detoxing your life, owning your feelings, supporting and connecting with others, mindfulness and meditation exercises, and more ideas for living mentally healthy.

Congratulations Dr. Antonio Byrd on the CCCC Award
UMKC English Department faculty member Dr. Antonio Byrd won the 2021 CCCC Richard Braddock Award for his article “’Like Coming Home’: African Americans Tinkering and Playing toward a Computer Code Bootcamp.”  This prestigious award is presented to the author of the outstanding article on writing or the teaching of writing in the journal College Composition and Communication. Dr. Byrd will be announced as a recipient of the Braddock Award during the 2021 CCCC Awards Presentation this Spring.
Dr. Byrd is co-facilitating a faculty learning community about writing intensive courses and co-leads the Faculty Writing Initiative. Dr. Jennifer Phegley, chair of the English Department, shares "I am delighted to have Antonio as our newest colleague in the English department! He brings a strong commitment to supporting student writing in the classroom and beyond. He has made excellent connections across the campus and in the community as he works to build our technical writing courses and to offer opportunities for students to learn about the crucial role writing plays in local businesses."
