Faculty Affairs Newsletter

20 August 2020 | volume 2 issue 1

We hope you will take a break and enjoy this issue of F.A.N.

The news is filled with triple-digit cases of COVID-19 on large campuses such as MU and KU. Here at UMKC, the latest numbers for fall total 6 on-campus cases as of midnight August 28. We are all doing our part to keep every Roo safe, whether that means teaching face-to-face with social distancing while streaming live on Zoom, teaching hybrid, or teaching asynchronously online. Labor Day weekend is almost here. We hope you have an opportunity to take time off and relax.

Service-Learning Reboot

Service-learning returned to the Provost Office for the first time since Students in the City (2006). Welcome back! Alexis Petri is directing service-learning on an interim basis and is working with two AmeriCorps VISTA members, Arya Shekarandaz and Joyce Morales, both recent UMKC graduates. Supporting faculty and students in community-based learning is one of the ways VISTA members accomplish their work because they are helping students with real-world learning while also helping nonprofits address local challenges. Thank you, Arya and Joyce, for entering into national service and helping students with community engagement and service-learning.

There's an app for that

Campus Screen is a new (and free) mobile app UMKC administration recommends for students, faculty, and staff to self-monitor for COVID. App users answer a series of questions and get a "Campus Pass" if all is well or a recommendation to follow up with a visit to a health professional, depending on symptoms.
