The CMU Swartz Center's Bootcamp Event Hits Big with
Special Guest Ray Lane, GreatPoint Ventures
Over seven hundred Carnegie Mellon students registered for the CMU Swartz Center's Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, which was held on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Kicked off by Swartz Center executive director Dave Mawhinney, the event gave the students an overview of programs and activities available, and also provided an opportunity for them to hear from several entrepreneurship club members, alumni and program representatives who shared their experiences. 

A highlight this year was a fireside chat featuring Ray Lane, Managing Partner at GreatPoint Ventures.

Locomation's Çetin Meriçli Joins Atlas Robotics as CEO
and Brings Firm's Headquarters to Pittsburgh
Çetin Meriçli, Carnegie Mellon 2013 Post Doctoral Fellow and the co-founder and former CEO of local autonomous trucking startup Locomation, Inc., has shifted gears to take the helm of Atlas Robotics, a firm that is developing robotics-based material handling solutions for manufacturing and warehousing facilities.

Refiberd Co-Founder Tushita Gupta Featured in TIME

Refiberd is using AI to change the amount of textiles that are thrown out and end up in landfill in the U.S. Thanks in part to chief technology officer Tushita Gupta’s innovative work, the California-based company founded by herself and Sarika Bajaj, their goal is to provide the most accurate summary of what types of materials are in any given textile item.

SWARTZ CENTER SPOTLIGHT
Y Combinator Visits the Swartz Center 
On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, over three hundered Carnegie Mellon students packed the CMU Swartz Center for a talk with Y Combinator Group Parter Diana Hu and co-founder and CEO of Gecko Robotics, Jake Loosararian. Diana and Jake discussed their personal founder journeys and what Diana has seen from advising hundreds of YC startups. They also discussed some of the myths that exist around starting startups and what to do while in school if you want to start a company.

Apply for the CSL Case Competition!

The Corporate Startup Lab (CSL) announces it's second annual All Graduate Student Case Competition. Sponsored by PNC Bank with the theme: Equity in Financial Services: Climate Resilient Housing, student teams will develop creative and entrepreneurial solutions around the intersection of affordable housing and climate resilience/energy solutions for low to moderate
income families. Total prizes of $20K will be awarded with $12K for the first place team. 

The final round will be held on November 1, 2023 and the winners will be announced at the Corporate Entrepreneurship Forum: Artificial Intelligence for Applied Innovation on November 2-3, 2023.

Are you a CMU graduate student interested in being a part of a network of entrepreneurially-minded students and furthering your startup dreams? Then the James R. Swartz Fellows program may be for you. Applications are open for the 2023-25 James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellows cohort.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM ET.
