UW-Whitewater’s Department of Special Education, a program unique in the state with its mission to prepare professionals to become change agents in their support of individuals with disabilities and their families, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award.

Kolden Severson, a 2023 graduate with a BSE in elementary education and a minor in Spanish, is working with Spanish speaking students in his role as a third-grade teacher at Washington Elementary in Whitewater. He was part of the community-based learning (CBL) program as an undergraduate and is now mentoring CBL students in his classroom.

Kudos to Dwight C. Watson, professor of curriculum and instruction, who presented the interactive workshop “Lift as You Climb: Black Leadership Joy” at the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education Annual Conference on March 23-26, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Kudos to Ruth Hansen, assistant professor of management, who co-authored the chapter “Sector theorists should consider how social values determine unmet needs” in the newly edited volume “Reimagining Nonprofits: Sector Theory in the Twenty-First Century.” Read more »
Kudos to Stephen Levas, associate professor of biology and geography, geology, and environmental science, and Peter Jacobs, professor of geography, geology, and environmental science, and the 13 students who traveled to Panama during spring break to study tropical conservation. The trip was part of a faculty-led program offered through the Center for Global Education.
Kudos to UC Graphics and Marketing and E Jeninga, an art major from Delavan, on winning first place in the Association of College Unions International Steal This Idea graphics competition. Jeninga’s design for the UC concourse mural won the student category of interior/wall art.
Kudos to education majors Mike Barker of Oconomowoc, Emily Meritt of Monroe, Jocelin Beecroft of Whitewater, Adoria Holmes of Beloit, Madison Pingel of South Elgin, Illinois, Mya Ploessl of Lancaster, and Sarah Lalasz of Whitewater for presenting at the 11th Special Education Conference and Workshops on Jan. 12 in Jamaica. The students were student-teaching in Mandeville and Mile Gully for the month of January.

| Sole Survivor on April 24
|
To mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month, University Health and Counseling Services is collecting old shoes through April 22 for a Sole Survivor display outside of the Ambrose Health Center on April 24. The display is intended to show that sexual assault occurs across the board — among all communities on campus and around the world. If you have any old or unused shoes, consider donating them to UHCS for this display. They will be donated to the Community Space, a local source of free clothing, furniture, houseware items and more to the community, after the exhibit is over.

Warhawks can keep the momentum going with summer session classes!
Students who pass at least one summer session course are more likely to stay in school and graduate in four years than those who don’t. UW-Whitewater’s flexible course options allow students to study from wherever their summer takes them. Most classes are three or six weeks (a few are nine or 12) and most are fully online!
