Hehir Invested as James F. Howard Jr. Professor in Neuromuscular Disorders

In a formal ceremony held January 26, Professor of Neurological Sciences Michael Hehir, M.D., was invested as the inaugural holder of the James F. Howard Jr. Professorship in Neuromuscular Disorders. This endowed professorship was established through the generosity of James F. Howard Jr., M.D.’74, and his wife, School of Nursing alum Adrienne (Brown) Howard ’75. The professorship supports clinical research in myasthenia gravis.

On January 24, the Larner College of Medicine held its annual Foundations Awards Celebration for the Class of 2026. The celebration not only acknow- ledges the completion of Foundations—the inaugural stage of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum—but also pays tribute to the students’ achievements and the dedicated teachers and staff who have guided them.

| Cancer Therapy Enters Phase 2
|
A promising anti-cancer treatment under investigation by the Cunniff Lab at the UVM Cancer Center and transitioned to clinical testing by RS Oncology has entered Phase 2 trials. RSO-021 is a new therapy for mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer linked to occupational asbestos exposure with a five-year survival rate of only 5 to 10 percent.

This synergy was evident at Larner College of Medicine’s inaugural Humanities in Medicine event, held on February 6, featuring local artist Mary Lacy.

ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

| A proposal by Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Scott Morrical, Ph.D., on the cyano-bacteriophage-encoded glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme was recently selected for funding by the UVM Retired Scholars Award Program. The program aims to support retired faculty members in pursuing research or scholarly projects post-retirement.

| Nimrat Chatterjee, M.Sc., Ph.D., Cancer Center member and assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, has been honored with a prestigious Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA, or R35) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The five-year $1.9 million grant will support Chatterjee’s work studying DNA damage and mutagenic repair responses.

| In a report in Nature Medicine, Cancer Center Member and Assistant Professor of Medicine James Gerson, M.D.
, and colleagues address questions about T-cell lymphomas in patients treated with CAR T-cell therapy. The researchers found that the risk of T-cell lymphomas following CAR T-cell therapy is minute, suggesting that the risk-benefit analysis for this potentially lifesaving therapy favors the positive benefit it can have on patients’ lives.

| Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Elias Klemperer, Ph.D., was recently awarded his first R01 grant
—a combined award from the Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products and the National Institute on Drug Abuse—to further study nicotine-limiting standards for cigarettes and e-cigarettes among adults in Rhode Island, Vermont, and Northern New York State.

| Professor of Psychiatry Julie Dumas, Ph.D., and C. Lawrence Kien, M.D., Ph.D., Mary Kay Davignon Green and Gold Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Medicine, have recently secured a $3.3M, five-year R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging for “Fatty Acid Modulation of Brain Functioning in Older Adults.” This award will enable the duo to delve deeper into the relationship between dietary fatty acids and cognitive health in older individuals.

| Applications for the Teaching Academy’s 2024 Frymoyer Scholars Program are due by March 1, 2024
