Those who know me are well aware that I can become deeply attached to a tag

TfT Bulletin #14  |   April 10, 2024

Those who know me are well aware that I can become deeply attached to a tagline, slogan, or quotation. I suppose my affinity for Storyline taglines is related to my affinity for quotations.
Lately I’ve been dwelling in the wisdom of these words from Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor
in the other direction.
This quotation leaves me wondering about, and trying to identify, wrong trains that I have boarded in my personal and professional life.
It leaves me wondering about wrong trains that our Christian schools may have boarded.
It leaves me wondering about the connection between running along corridors on wrong trains and sustainability and weariness. Maybe the right move is to simply get off the train before heading in a new direction.
My hope is that these words invite you also to reflect on your own life (personally, professionally) and your classroom and/or Christian school.
I love myself a good quote.

Instructional Coaching Intensive: Sneak Peak

We are very close to opening up registration for our annual TfT Instructional Coaching Intensive in Philadelphia from Nov. 13-15, 2024.
As we finalize details, we want to share a couple exciting pieces emerging.
First, once again, we will offer a pre-intensive event on Nov. 13. Details to be revealed soon....
Second, while we will continue to provide Level 100, Level 200, and Level 300 Instructional Coaching training, we are also going to provide Level 400 in a collaborative partnership with The Colossians Forum, whose WayFinder program helps schools develop cultures that engage differences in Christ-like ways. Since TfT implementation is by nature disruptive, Level 400 is designed to empower leadership teams to lead well through this ongoing disruption to learning and growth. Our plan is for principals and heads of school to join their TfT lead teacher in Level 400. We are excited for this newest addition to the Instructional Coaching Intensive and invite you to imagine and plan accordingly!

Celebration of Learning: Celebrating staff growth at Byron Center Christian

It is that time of year—Celebrations of Learning are occurring across our TfT school network. Kristin VanWieren, TfT Director and Instructional Coach at Byron Center Christian School, shares how their TfT site visit from last year catalyzed a Celebration of Learning this year . . . for teachers! Choosing one of the TfT goals from the site visit, each teacher created a presentation to share that invited colleagues to explore how this goal came alive in their classroom this year. Gain a glimpse into this story of an effective staff celebration of learning.

Elementary TfT: Elementary Art at Borculo Christian School

We live in a broken world where so many people do not know the truth of the gospel.  We are called to share the good news, but are we prepared? In Wendy Kragt’s art classes, she empowered students at Borculo Christian with the skills to tell God’s story in words and through art. Consistent with Wendy’s Deep Hope (“that we use art to express and celebrate our personality and to share our place in God’s great story”), students incorporated their personality into creating artwork that tells the gospel story. The students exhibited their work and shared their stories at the school’s annual Soup Supper. Check out the details of this formative experience.

Secondary TfT: Biology at Lansing Christian School

“The heavens declare the glory of God” (Ps. 19:1). The Deep Hope of Kelly Joos, biology teacher at Lansing Christian School, is that her students “would hear the heavens, join the heavens, and bring Heaven.” As the students study ecology, photosynthesis and respiration, viruses and bacteria, they focus on water. Students have opportunities throughout the semester to “bring Heaven” as they participate in scientific research and service by performing water quality tests at a nearby creek, participating in a Lake Michigan microplastic survey, and partnering with World Vision to provide clean water to those who currently do not have access. You are able to glimpse this work by accessing last year’s completed Storyboard and this year’s evolving Storyboard. Student reflections also contribute to a devotional book that they make throughout the year.

TfT Tips Trio

As we see in Kelly’s story above, the classroom storyboard serves as a map of the learning journey within God’s story. Check out this week’s tips for ideas on how to capitalize on the storyboard as a tool that facilitates student reflection and explicitly connects the TfT practices.
