Spotlight on Project Dragonfly
Miami students earning graduate degrees through Project Dragonfly in the biology department have been busy this year! Dragonfly students engage in inquiry-driven learning and community engagement through Earth Expeditions (EE), the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP), and the Global Field Program (GFP). Here are just a few recent accomplishments:
• GFP graduate student Greg Harris was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award, and in August 2023 he will embark on a trip to Iceland to teach at the University of Iceland and conduct research and write about conservation and climate change in the Arctic.
• GFP graduate students Willy Herrera and Maria Pirner were awarded the José Pareja-Wendy Tori Scholarship. This summer Herrera will travel to the Galápagos Islands to study the forces of evolutionary, geologic, and social change through work with ECOS, a newly established local Galápagos organization grounded by its start as a program of Ecology Project International. Pirner will travel to Costa Rica to study ecology and ecotourism.
• AIP graduate student Viviana Moreno currently serves on Miami University’s 2023-2024 DEI Graduate Student Advisory Board. Both Moreno and GFP student Savannah Wheeler served on the board in 2022-2023. The board helps shape efforts to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusivity across graduate programs at Miami.

Luxembourg Plaque Unveiling Honors One of Miami’s Most immersive Intercultural Experiences
In May, representatives from Global Initiatives joined the Provost and the College of Education, Health, and Society for the unveiling of a new plaque dedicated to Miami's partnership with École internationale Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE), an international school in Luxembourg.
The partnership has been life-changing for MUDEC students. Tamara Montes ‘23 was planning to become a social worker until she served as a third grade student-teacher at EIDE during her Luxembourg semester. "When I came back, I wanted to incorporate what I learned, which is why I decided to teach at a bilingual school. We can bring so much more into our classrooms,” she said.
